When eight year old Katie Chance imagined she had an angel in her pocket she told her dad that she wanted to write a song. As she thought about angels, she saw love everywhere thus penning her first song, “Love in My Pocket,” a child’s interpretation of a world so filled with love you can actually see it all around you.
This Nashville native’s musical talents were evident very early in her life as she began to sing well before she could talk. Now Katie is ten years old and has just completed her debut album “Friends,” and with the special help of her music friends, the album features duets and collaborations with music icons Charlie Daniels, Sawyer Brown and Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys. “Friends” is staged as Katie’s musical interpretation of the day in the life of a child and contains 8 songs, 3 of which she wrote including the title track. “This project is both for kids and adults,” says Katie. “I call it ‘happy music’ because it is music that just makes you smile!”
Scheduled for release in the summer of 2009, portion of the proceeds from “Friends” will benefit The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Autism Research Program (TRIAD) where Katie was diagnosed with autism at thirty-two months and participated in their research program for three years. Credited to Vanderbilt faculty’s direction in early intervention and her faith in God, Katie made remarkable improvements and is now an accomplished student, young songwriter and recording artist.
Katie’s writing and recording credits include original songs in the children’s film “King Red,” winner of the 2007 Louisiana State Film Festival’s “Best Original Music” and 2007 New York Independent Film and Video Festival’s “Best Children’s Short Film,” and the theme song for the National Campaign for non-profit children’s charity, “Project Linus.”
Katie has a special love for musical theatre and has enjoyed lead and supporting roles in a variety of shows including, “Treasure Island,” “Bertha,” “Holly and the Holiday Spirits,” “Bye, Bye Birdie,” “101 Dalmatian’s,“ “A Christmas to Remember” and she was recently cast as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz. She is also an original member of the national all-girls singing group, “Roar into Action Kids Club.” Katie enjoys all genres of music including Musical Theatre, Classical, Christian, Pop, Children’s music and Country.
Already a veteran entertainer, Katie made her debut performance at the 2008 Country Music Association Music Festival in Nashville, TN. As one of the youngest artists to be invited to perform on a CMA stage, Katie performed to an enthusiastic standing room only crowd. The CMA invited her back again to perform in June 2009. She was also most excited to be invited by The Autism Society of Middle Tennessee as their special guest performer during their annual black tie gala which was held at The Frist Center in Nashville, TN and presented by the Frist family. Katie performed at the inaugural for the national organization, Autism Speaks “2008 Walk for a Cure” and recently received an invitation to perform again in 2009.
Despite Katie’s early musical successes, when asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Chance is quick to say, “A speech pathologist, of course!”
