Katie Chastain writes in snapshots and close-ups, revealing an image, moment, or emotion in urgent detail (Drunk kaleidoscope of pink/Breathless at the bathroom sink). This is not poetry so much as abstract art.
Chastains sweet, almost broken-down voice whispers through a convincing and active musical darkness where the soundscape is simultaneously alien and melodic, beat-driven and lyrical. She doesnt sit back in the groove so much as let it pull her along.
Katie Chastain's debut album, 'Firecracker', is exclusively available through mail and at shows in New York City this fall.
I can't tell you how much I love Firecracker. I heard a couple of demos about a year and a half ago and those melodies were utterly possessing. Now hearing the final product, I am entranced over and over. Lovely stuff. I think it is one of the best albums and certainly the most singular statement of last year.
So lately I've been rocking the Frosted Mini-Wheats pretty hard. I think I burnt myself out on eggs. Also, lots of spinach salads. Makes me think of you! :)
watched firefly tonight begrudgingly at first then I got really into it. Thought of you. :) Hope your Christmas was merry and bright, sweet love! Happy New Year!! I hope it holds good things!
are you in town today? robert pinsky and the rest of the BU faculty are giving a free reading tonight at 7:30pm...i'll call later if i don't hear from you. hope last night's show went well. love, reva
Oh my gosh! The National is the find of the century!!!! I can't get that CD out of my CD player. It is changing my life and rocking my world!! May his tribe increase, bless him!
Hey I'm online too!!!!!!!!!! Let's talk soon about Turkey Time! I can talk today if you want. I had a great day yesterday at work and then I had a crap day today at work--both days revolving around being evaluated by my peers. Feel like a doofus today. My own fault. So feel free to cheer me up all you want. I'm either going to get drunk right now at 2pm or I'm going to eat a cheeseburger. Or both.
Well, Red, I must say (if you will pardon the obvious record label pun) that I'd give my eyed teeth to be at the Piano's show tonight. Hope you rocked the house.
File under Top 5 reasons why my life can never be as good as it might otherwise be: the distance between myself and the new Katie Chastain show. I'm reading about quantum mechanics today. Maybe I can discover a way to collapse the distance between coasts and over Middle America. Got any ideas, GPS girl? Love you. Peace.
I just wanted to say that I love your c.d. My grandmother is friends with your mom and that's how I got a copy to listen to. My grandmother really likes your music too!
