Who is Katie Gavin?

Oh, hey there, you. I’m Katie. I’m not a fan of the big, professional bio, especially because I am not a big, professional person. Well, technically I am taller than the average girl, but still. My parents are lawyers, so no major musical influence in this girl’s childhood. I spent most of my younger years dancing far too enthusiastically in my basement to artists like Samantha Mumba and the Spice Girls, who ultimately played a huge role in the development of my overall sound and message….oh, if only. I started writing songs when I was around thirteen, after I had learned enough chords on the guitar to fool people into thinking that I actually played it. Writing was something I never took seriously, only doing it when I felt like it. However, as time passed, I found myself wanting to do it more and more. It was like an expensive brand of cocaine that I couldn’t get enough of, only instead of deteriorating my nasal cavity, it allowed me to have a greater sense of understanding and a new way to access my emotions, in order to reflect on my experiences. I played my first public show at the age of fifteen in an adorable little shack that I’m ninety percent sure was the original storage facility for a nearby football field. However, as I watched my best friends sing along to every word of Gear Song, I realized that this was something I wanted to keep doing for as long as possible. I applied to Grammy Camp that summer, a program at the USC Thornton School of Music sponsored by the Grammy Foundation for aspiring musicians, producers, writers, and promoters. Spending ten days in the midst of eighty-three staggeringly talented kids, countless industry professionals, and a documentary film crew there to follow our every move, was both the most frightening and thrilling experience of my life. Grammy Camp taught me that no experience is really worthwhile unless it makes you feel like you might wet yourself and sparks a nerve-induced heat rash on your chest that causes unwanted attention. After camp ended, I was informed that the documentary filmed at camp was going to be titled after lyrics in my song Fallen (Happy On The Ground, soon-to-be-released). This was the first time I felt like my music had really been recognized, and that was a little hard to grasp at first, but after extensive celebratory dancing, I had come to the decision that maybe I could really do this. You know, this music thing, for life. I’m still only seventeen, one more year of high school left to conquer, but the plan is to keep writing, playing, recording, and learning. Oh, and to keep getting heat rashes whenever I perform. I hope those never go away.
