About Us:
Founded in 1979 by a small group of Pilipino / Pilipino Americans in the Lothian Residence Halls of the University of California in Riverside. The organization began with the purpose of representing the Pilipino/a and Pilipino/a American population of UCR and to educate others about themselves.
The mission of the Katipunan (Pilipino Student Organization) of UC Riverside is to better the awareness and development of the Pilipino/a and Pilipino/a American culture through educational, political, and social means, with the cooperation of the administration, faculty, and students. The name of the organization was derived from the national revolutionary group of the Philippines led by Andres Bonifacio (and later, Emilio Aguinaldo). Through the years, Katipunan (Pilipino Student Organization) of UC Riverside has adopted a number of supplementary names to help people better recognize the organization, the most recent being Filipino American Student Union (Katipunan-FASU). It has reverted back to being known simply as Katipunan (Pilipino Student Organization) of UC Riverside during the past school year. Membership numbers of the organization reach around 200-300 members, slowly increasing as the school year progresses. Although a very small percentage of the 16,000 total students that were enrolled by fall 2002, it is still one of the largest organizations on campus.
