    ..Katyayani.. ..Katyayani is a mixture of deep, meditative nujazz/downtempo inspired by experiences from nature combined with consciousness from the 90's Golden Era of hiphop. ..One could describe the music as the meditativeness of ..Massive Attack's ..Teardrop.... combined with philosophical anecdotes of rapper ..Common..... ..The group consists of: .. ....Catarina Ahlstrand-Jalonen.. on lead vocals.. ....Tapani Jalonen.. on vocals and Fender Rhodes electric piano.. ....Jaakko Martikainen.. on Flute and Soprano/Tenor Sax .. ....Juha Tuukkanen.. on machines and turntables.. .. .. ..Background.. ..In her early years Catarina was already surrounded by music. Her father is a singer/songwriter, so having musicians around the house was part of her life. At the age of 10 she made her radio debut, singing one of her father’s newly recorded songs. She also spent a long time performing as a dancer in various settings... ..In 1998 Catarina met jazz pianist and her to-be husband Tapani Jalonen who had just returned from West Africa and turned her on to jazz. They originally started performing together as a duo. The repertoire was original arrangements of 40s-50s jazz standards from Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and the like. Positive feedback from gigs with the duo made them understand that the natural next step would be to start writing their own music. Both were already developing material at that point... ..In 2000 Catarina realized that she wanted music to be a bigger part of her life, and started looking for a vocal tutor. She found a private teacher with a folk music background, and started training her voice and found herself getting into Kalevala lores and joiku singing... ..In 2003 Catarina met with Juha Tuukkanen, founder of ..Spyritual.. and they found similar interests in music. Catarina began to combine her lyrics with Spyritual's soundscapes, soon joined by Tapani as co-writer and co-arranger. ..Katyayani was born..... ..The meaning.. ..The name Katyayani is a word derived from Sanskrit language, meaning “The one who incarnated to help the Devas”. The name is also the sixth form of the Hindu goddess Durga, and an important symbol of courage...
