«Two women, one fat and the other slim, sat on strawbottomed chairs, knitting black wool. The slim one got up and walked straight at me - still knitting with downcast eyes - and only just when I began to think of getting out of her way, as you would for a somnambulist, stood still, and looked up. Her dress was as plain as an umbrella-cover, and she turned round without a word and preceded me into a waiting-room.»
The debut online release from Katzgraben (Merzbau 2008) was an improvised sketch of "home demos for imaginary film scenes, literary passages, unfinished paintings and experimental photography". But it was also the starting point for a blind leap into musique concrète concepts, monolithic soundscapes, and a certain lynchian type of sonorous narrative. Katzgraben's original elements - stray guitars, ghostly spoken words and breathless melodicas - have now a different texture.
