Post revolution Iran. The Islamic clerics that come to power, weary of Western values, ban the consumption of music from outside of Iran. Like any confined populace, the black market for all forms of American products blossoms, with pop music being at the forefront of this underground trade.
Cassette tapes with the previous year's pop hits are traded amongst the youth of the country beneath school desks and in crowded school courtyards. It was one such tape that would change the course of Kaveh Soroush's life from a young age. The music was unlike anything he had ever heard before - and the only thing he could think of was getting more tapes.
Soon after having amassed what was then an entirely illegal and gluttonous supply of these black market tapes, fate brought Kaveh to America to indulge his musical thirst with reckless abandon. Hugely influenced by a relatives vast vinyl collection, featuring electronic pioneers like Yello and Jean Michel Jarre's 'Oxygene', his early musical encounters were the foundation upon which his later DJing and production would be placed.
Today, Kaveh is co-owner of Brandnewvibe Recordings with fellow label mate Russ Kaulback. The label struck gold with its very first release in August of 2007 with Rossell's "Dancing with Strangers" which got picked up by Sander Kleinenberg for his "This is Everybody" series - as well as Ministry of Sound for its Summer Sessions series (Dave Spoon's Disc). BNV (as its referred to) would go on to be featured on Essential Mixes/Selection, John Digweed's Transitions show, and garnered the support of top DJs like James Zabiela, Hernan Cattaneo, James Talk, Paolo Mojo, Nic Fanciulli, 16 Bit Lolitas, Jody Wisternoff, and even Paul Van Dyk.
Needless to say the unprecedented success of such feats in less than a 6 month period was only confirmation of the hard work put in by the founders of the burgeoning label. Shunning categories - Kaveh Soroush's mixes and productions are in line with his philosophy about bnv as well - "I don't want to have releases that are all tech house, or all electro, or all prog. I love music in all various genres of electronic music and I want Brandnewvibe to be a reflection of that".
