Kaya Burgess is a British singer-songwriter and purveyor of indie-folky pop songs.
He owns too many sunglasses. The badges on his guitar strap stab him during gigs. If he listens very closely to his tinnitus he can make out the piano riff from Year of the Cat. He promised never to write about himself in the third person. (He lied).
Still a little giddy from playing the Meltdown Festival and performing with Elbow at the Royal Festival Hall, Kaya is currently spending his nights adding sparkly beeps and whistles to folky tunes - pretending to think deep thoughts while really just trying not to forget the melodies he was humming a second ago. He is working on his EP. Which will be finished soon. Honest.
“Like a mix between a modern Simon & Garfunkel and a male Kate Nash.” ------- Ham&High
"I can't put my finger on it, but I like it a lot and it's very personal and unique. It's got this old, worn feel to it, like a historic city after the lights go out and only a few dim pubs are still open, a handful of patrons inside drinking up the last dregs of the day. In other words, it's brilliant." ------- Tortoise Crossing
"Kaya (it rhymes with 'fire') is certainly a talent to keep your eye upon. Like Google, YouTube and Cristiano Ronaldo before him, Mr Burgess is a hot property for this new century with his stock sure to rise. With an intricacy of lyric reminiscent of a young Cole Porter and an ease and charm of performance…this young man has all the necessary ingredients. You'll find him gracefully crafting delicate songs from now until his inevitable Royal Albert Hall debut so we at Topoftheox Live urge you not to miss out." ------- Top of the Ox
The tracks on this page are acoustic demos of songs in production for 'The New Grey Whistle Test EP'. Folk-rock legend Al Stewart - Kaya's hero and main topic of conversation - has lent his ear and input to early cuts of the record, which is due for completion in early 2010.
The video above was recorded by ITV for the single 'I Fall For Lucy', which is due to appear on the EP when it (finally) sees the light of day...
By day, Kaya is a writer and journalist at The Times newspaper. You can follow his latest news (in every sense) on his Twitter page.

It’s been far too long since I last said hello and so much has happened I thought it about time we did.
We’ve changed a lot, now we are an “UltraModern, post-electro rock, post-nu rave behemoth where Muse and Mansun meet a Massive Attack with Duran Duran pop sensibilities, louder guitars, and a stunning female front person/guitar virtuoso”, or so we have been told.
I’d love to know what you’ve been up to since we disappeared into the dark damp studio cave, let us know how it’s going, I’m always up for a chat! May your thoughts be Scarlet and your actions Blonde ;-) Dawn xx Scarlet/blonde
