Kaya & Captain Temper – the band - was born in 2010 sparked by the creative partnership of Kaya and what was previously First Mate Temper in the in a random talk on the Black Pearl (their friend’s boat) on tour in France last summer.
2010 so far has seen them return to play in France three times, two mini UK tours, a quick visit to Norway and regular gigs in the North West.
A long awaited single is due to be released late September, with an album to come early 2011 –partly recorded in the famous Parr Street studios, partly on location back in their port away from home in Le Havre, France.

Kaya and The Captain first got to know each other backstage of the Royal Variety Show in 2007 whilst singing backing for Seal and Jon Bon Jovi with Sense of Sound. A hectic year of singing with people like Ringo Starr at the Liverpool Capital of Culture Opening, finalists in BBC1’s Last choir standing BBC Nativity followed, and this is where the friendship and creative partnership flourished from Dave to creating music together.
They have played together now since January 2009, but it’s only now the firm band identity is formed, whether with the full band or as a duo.
With long track record of gigs including playing alongside Brett Anderson (Suede), Cherry Ghost, Noah and the Whale, Sandi Thom, Polly Mackey & The Pleasure Principle, The Wombats, Marina & The Diamonds, Foy Vance and pretty much the whole Liverpool scene, the newly formed sound has given the band a firm place in their song based alternative melodic rock, whilst incorporating blues, funk, roots and nu folk influences.
Kaya has become a well-know name on the local scene and was chosen as BBC Merseyside ‘Artist of the Month’ and as ‘Spotlight Artist’ for Liverpool Acoustic. Her debut album 'Balloon in a Cactus Field' was released on Ultimate Fake Records and is “a collection of beautifully crafted songs with a surprising bite”.
Dave O Grady in his solo ventures has also been a regular on the scene for a while, and it was a natural process to put the two heads together, although you may still see them running around on their own.
In short, Kaya & Captain Temper is a dynamic act and prolific songwriters with most of the second album already written .

If you watch Kaya and the band play, you get these guys as well:
Dave - Guitar and Backing Vocals
Martin- Bass
Ryan - Drums
If you are really lucky you could also have cello from Nicole, and backing vocals from my sister Ane.. although that's mostly on the record!
:: THE REVIEWS ::
“An outstandingly talented Norwegian/Scouse songwriter, Kaya's output is hard, constructed melodicism delivered with an extraordinary vocal talent.”
- Order, BarFly Magazine
I can honestly say that this girl is in the first division of the first league of champions in her craft. Meat Market Special is cocky and charming, spritely and energetic, dynamic and original and The sick champagne waltz just happens to be all of that and oh my God how the hauntingly chilling strings opening makes this song so much more!
- International Online Magazine
“Both as a musician and a person, Kaya strikes the perfect balance. She is warm, charming and light-hearted in the gaps between songs and serious, powerful and mesmerising when it comes to the rendering of her music.
- Pollen8
“ Music of this calibre can burst your heart with its inviolate beauty (...) one of the most compelling, complete and classy acts that you're likely ever to see (…) these are real songs performed by an artist deserving of a wider stage. The widest stage.” Magnificent. "
- Joe Shooman, Drowned in Sound Magazine
....
Huge vocal extravaganza, dynamic songs at their best. "
