Okay back at the
ranch........

Olympic National Park...this past fall
I'm a
has been creekin' hack that is lucky enough to have over 20 first descents and
over 10 rapid completions. I have been featured in 8 kayaking videos and have
produced two videos and I still love to boat, and have been lucky to paddle in
the company of great paddlers (past and present), who were kind enough to let me
tag along. My favorite run still to this day is
Johnnies Creek in Alabama.
My
favorite runs in my paddling career are the following
Lower Cullasaja,
Henderson, the
"Real" Brush Creek,
Little Possum,
Miller,
Johnnies Creek, and later stages of my career the
East Fork of the Lewis, there are many other others but for some reason
these just stick out for the moment.
Old School

First Descent Little Possum
Creek-Early 90's
I
started paddling when I was 7 on the
Buffalo River in Arkansas. Then in 1988 I bought my first boat from a yuppie
, it was a Mirage and it was a hot boat for the time. I started slowly
progressing , and then in 1991
Terry Smith invited me on a First Descent on
Henderson Creek, and I really liked the idea of bagging a First D'. Later
that year Psycho lead me down the
Narrows of the Green, and I was hooked on Creeking. That winter Risa and
Woody Callaway (they were married then) ,and
Doug Wellman took me down the
Bear at 2 ft, it was like swallowing the pill in the Matrix, although scared
$%&*less, I was hooked, and started looking for obscure runs and really got into
exploring and pioneering runs......
So later more became more, and we started taking a video
camera, and with the footage, we gave it
Mike "Louie" Lewis, and
he entered to the Blue Grass Festival, and won, later with more footage, He made
the videos
"Uh Oh's and Oh Shit's"
and "One Winter and a Few Falls" ;Falls was a narrated video, and a
little on the dry side, so
Jim Little and I took the
footage and added music to it and we named it
"Bootleg Louie', unknowst to Louie, and made bootlegs with 2 VCRs ;every
time we turned around someone wanted another copy , so we had MORE footage and
hence "Falling
Off Walden's Ridge " was born, it horrible
grainy footage, but it showed a lot of new runs, and got the attention of
Dagger. The Late
Frankie Hubbard pushed
us on them and it was a blessing I was cracking boats every 6 weeks, and we were
pushing the limits on the gear (and bodies).
So
later, we get on board with Dagger in the Harriman days, and
Jim Little and I are on their boat program, Brian Collins becomes a partner
in crime and we start filming, one year later "Steep
Creekin' is born .(Every weekend and lot of weekdays ended up 20 mins.
of footage!) After conflicts with Dagger over boat designs and not wanting on
Team D because we wouldn't rodeo. I leave and go to Chan at Wavesport, and it
was a happy marriage, gear was easy to get, custom lay-ups were the norm and
accessory gear was given out like water. I later was on some of the Team
DoubleYouEss videos in the mid 90's........then the kids came.....
NOW

East
Fork of the Lewis -Present
Then the
kids came, and I got out of boating, and took off about 7 +/- years, Then the
big D' hit, and now I'm boating again!
I feel
very lucky to get back into boating now that I 'm back it's more fun, and
doesn't feel like a full time job. I also feel lucky that the hard worked we did
in the past is thought of and was flattered when Ben at
SteepCreeks wanted to interview me. To see the interview
