Groupe incontournable de la scène Reggae française, KAYANS perpétue la tradition du « Roots » Jamaïcain, en distillant un Reggae originel, empreint de spiritualité, d’émotion et d’espoir; un Reggae chaleureux, à l’ancienne, un rien anachronique et intemporel.
Né le 20 Février 1970, à Bouaké (Côte d’Ivoire), d’une mère Guadeloupéenne et d’un père Martiniquais, Jean-Michel IVANES aka JIMAÏ, fait ses premières armes au début des années 90, à la batterie puis à la basse, au sein du groupe de Reggae « Oracle », à Reims (51).
Influencé, dès son plus jeune âge, par sa grand-mère maternelle, célèbre organiste de musique antillaise et religieuse dans les années 50-70 et par sa mère également pianiste, mais surtout mélomane, Jimaï forme le groupe KAYANS avec des amis partageant la même passion que lui pour le Reggae de Bob Marley, de Burning Spear ou de Peter Tosh. Il devient le chanteur leader du groupe et franchit une nouvelle étape musicale en interprétant dorénavant ses propres compositions, en français, anglais et créole.
Après quatre années passées à jouer dans les bars, les KAYANS auto- produisent leur premier cd 4 titres « Livin in Hope » en 1997. Ce n’est qu’en 2000, de retour d’une tournée de six semaines au Bénin, qu’ ils enregistrent leur véritable premier album « Perds la raison », co-produit par Michel Jovanovic (MEDIACOM) et comportant 13 titres, dont la reprise en français du célèbre « I shot the sheriff » du légendaire Bob Marley .
Des cafés-concerts aux plus prestigieuses salles de spectacles (Zénith de Paris, Elysée Montmartre, Aéronef, Krakatoa, Transbordeur, Nikaïa, Exo7, La Laiterie …), les KAYANS s’attachent depuis quinze ans, à se perfectionner et à mûrir au contact de la scène nationale et internationale (Francofolies de Montréal en juillet 2008, Bilbao en Novembre 2006, Festival de Safi au Maroc en Juillet 2006, tournée au Bénin en 2000 …).
Durant ces années, KAYANS a aussi assuré la première partie des plus grands artistes de Reggae : The Wailers, Israël Vibration, Culture, Third World, Gladiators, LKJ, Alpha Blondy, Meditations, Congos, Max Roméo…
En 1998, la rencontre avec Albert GRIFFITHS des GLADIATORS marque le début d’une longue collaboration entre les deux groupes.
- Les KAYANS sont invités à se produire en première partie de tous les concerts de la légendaire formation Jamaïcaine, durant leurs tournées françaises de 1998, 1999 et 2002.
- C’est à Kingston, Jamaïque, qu’ils enregistrent leur dernier album en date, sorti en Avril 2006, fruit d’une nouvelle expérience musicale entre les deux groupes : « ZION » KAYANS MEETS GLADIATORS (Kayans/Booster/Atoll).
- Enfin, en novembre de cette même année, Jimaï est l’invité des Gladiators durant leur tournée européenne et fait la promotion du dernier opus des KAYANS sur scène avec eux.
2007 marque également un tournant dans l’histoire du groupe KAYANS.
RICHACHA batteur des Wailers et d’Alpha Blondy, JUNIOR bassiste de Jimmy Cliff, et deux chanteuses de Gospel, KRYSTAL et OLIVIA, rejoignent le groupe composé alors de Dr WISE le clavier et arrangeur du groupe, IWé le guitariste rythmique, GODWILL le guitariste soliste, COCOCHE et NICO les cuivres et JIMAÏ.
Au cours des élections municipales 2008, KAYANS soutient la candidate socialiste et actuelle maire de Reims, Mme Adeline HAZAN, en se produisant lors de meeting concerts.
Le groupe travaille actuellement sur un nouveau projet d’album, dont certains titres comme « Libérez la Côte d’Ivoire », « Respect » ou encore « Ki est Ki ? » ont déjà enthousiasmé le public des FRANCOFOLIES de Montréal, lors du passage de KAYANS les 29 et 30 Juillet dernier.
Le nouvel album des KAYANS, qui devrait voir le jour en Novembre 2009, sera le résultat de quinze années d’une fructueuse expérience musicale et le fruit d’une réelle maturité acquise au fil des nombreux concerts , des enregistrements en studio et des multiples rencontres .
Un album 100% KAYANS, riche de son éclectisme, de sa puissance de frappe, de son authenticité et de son originalité.
KAYANS BIOGRAPHY
Known as a reference of the french roots rock reggae, KAYANS is a band that is carrying on the Jamaican tradition of roots reggae. The “Kayans music” is full of spirituality, emotion and hope. This is a timeless and anachronistic reggae style that is the pride and joy of Jimaï, the founder of the band.
Jean-Michel “JIMAÏ” IVANES was born in Ivory Coast, Africa, on February 20, 1970. His parents are from the French West Indies (Guadeloupe and Martinica). His first musical influences came from his grand-mother, a great pianist-organist in the West Indies. Then, while growing up, he has been attracted by famous artists such as Bob Marley, Albert Griffiths, Joseph Hill, Winston Rodney and many other Jamaican artists.
Jimaï started out at the beginning of the 90s, as drummer and bass man of a French reggae band called « ORACLE », in Reims. In December1993, he created his own band called the KAYANS that means: Kaya and soul. Since that moment, he took on the role of leader, singer, and main songwriter of KAYANS. He started then to spread his own compositions in French, English and Creole, all over France and Europe.
In 1998, after the first single released a year earlier, KAYANS recorded an 8- tracks tape ‘lovin you’ in their own studio, with sales of around 2500 copies. In 2001, MEDIACOM, a French reggae-booking agency, became interested in the group, and then produced their first album “Perds la raison”, which included the French version of Bob Marley’s ‘I shot the sheriff’.
KAYANS has performed with great reggae artists such as THE WAILERS, ISRAEL VIBRATION, CULTURE, ALPHA BLONDY and most recently, Albert GRIFFITHS and the GLADIATORS.
As support band during the three GLADIATORS French Tours in1998, 1999 and 2002, KAYANS was particularly appreciated for the quality of the shows and the positive message always delivered. Along the tours in France, KAYANS has performed in the biggest concert halls, like “Zenith of Paris”, “Nikaïa” in Nice (along with ALPHA BLONDY and L.K.J), “Zenith of Caen”, “Krakatoa” in Bordeaux, to name a few. This has permitted them to conquer the heart of much more people in France, and over Europe.
In the year 2000, KAYANS went in Benin, Africa, for a 6-week promotion tour and played in front of 50 000 people in Cotonou stadium, which was one of their best live performances.
The group has also performed at big festivals like the “Francofolies of Montreal in 2008”, “Printemps de Bourges” (1998 and 2005), “Festival des mondes solidaires” (2002), “Jazz sur Lie festival” (1998), “octobrock festival” (1996)…
The latest album of the band (ZION-Kayans meets Gladiators in J.A), released in April 2006, was produced by Jimaï himself and recorded in Jamaica, with the legendary band GLADIATORS. In November- December of the same year, Jimaï was invited by the Gladiators to tour all over Europe and to promote his latest album on stage with them.
The year 2007 has been a turning point in the history of the band. Indeed, Dr Wise (keyboard and arrangement), Iwé (rhythm guitarist), Godwill (lead guitarist), Cocoche & Nico (horns section), and Jimaï have welcomed new comers in the band: Richacha (ex-drummer for the legendary Wailers as well as for Alpha Blondy), Junior (Jimmy Cliff’s ex- bass player), Krystal & Olivia (two gospel singers).
During the 2008 local elections, KAYANS supported the socialist campaigner and current mayor of the town of Reims, Mrs Adeline Hazan, by performing during her meetings.
The band is now working on a new album, of which songs like “Libérez la Côte d’Ivoire”, “Respect” and “ki est ki” have already filled the public of the Francofolies of Montreal with enthusiasm, during their shows on July 29 and July 30, 2008.
The new album of the KAYANS is thought to come out in november of the year 2009.This will be the result of 15 years of fruitful musical experience as well as the result of an effective maturity reached thanks to numerous shows, recordings and wonderful enriching encounters.

En ouverture du Match de Rugby France / Afrique du Sud, Ras Dumisani chantera l'hymne national sud africain "Nkosi Sikelela" accompagné de 62 musiciens.
Jean-Philippe LAFONT quant à lui interprètera La Marseillaise accompagné du même orchestre Harmonique.
Comment vas-tu ? Le programme du 10 novembre est très tentant, Reims est à 1h45 de Lille, c'est fort problable que je me déplace, tu pourrais m'avoir un tarif réduit ;) ? Comment avance le financement de vos enregistrements ?
