For years, mainstream America and Europe has been showing a strong infatuation for Caribbean culture. This is particularly evident in today’s music. A lot of artists today tend to ‘borrow’ a little Caribbean flavor to accent their music and give it that special touch. As a result, there is a new found love for the Caribbean worldwide. Reggae and Soca music has gained particular popularity in European territories to the point that you now find German and Portuguese reggae artists and non-English speaking persons dancing and grooving to the melodies of soca songs.
This new found love for Caribbean culture has also made it possible for artists from that region to achieve tremendous success in the music and entertainment industry. Besides the traditional moguls of our past such as Bob Marley, Burning Spear and Mighty Sparrow, a newer, younger generation has captured the spotlight with the likes of Elephant Man, Rihanna, Kardinal Official and Sean Kingston.
From the small, tranquil island of St. Lucia comes a new star to the spotlight. His name is Kayo.
20 year old Kayo, born Filbert Salton, grew up in a small family in Ciceron. There was always a heavy influence of the arts in Kayo’s life but the true love for music slowly crept in over &the years. He started out, like many others, simply writing poetry as a form of venting emotions that he couldn’t express otherwise. Then came the casual freestyles in high school, in his neighborhood and at his barbershop. The buzz he was creating through these freestyles gained him the favor of many people within the local media. As his love slowly grew, so did his talent.
In 2004, he met up with a local recording artist/producer/engineer by the name of Cory(Wildchild) Raggie. After some discussion, he started recording a number of projects with Wildchild. Those projects, however, were merely freestyles on industry beats which he used to shop around to build his popularity. The following year brought many blessings to young Kayo. He was introduced to a prominent local jazz group by the name of ‘Sisterhood’. They were looking for a hip hop artist to collaborate with. They said they were looking to fuse the modern genre with their contemporary sound, along with sustaining that Caribbean essence in the music. The result was ‘Dear Music’, Kayo’s first official single within the Caribbean which was recorded and produced in Trinidad by young super producer, Kasey Phillips. That quickly catapulted Kayo to the ranks of the elite artists in his island. Thus far, he has performed on the same stage as entertainment moguls like Ciarra, Shurwayne Winchester and Isasha, just to name a few. In addition to this, he has featured on a number of tracks with many prominent local and regional artists, including remixes with Destra Garcia and King David out of Trinidad. He has been fortunate enough to meet celebrities like Fredro Starr, Ray-J, Short Mack and Destra Garcia who all hold the same notion that Kayo’s sound and style has been described as a twist of Jay-z, Nas, Common and Jadakiss with that spicy, Caribbean flavour in his tone. The sky is the limit for this Caribbean artist, this lyrical behemoth. As his hunger grows, so does his talent and creative spirit. The world is yet to be impacted by this genesis in music.
