    Green Roofs

"Going Green" seems to be all the rage these days and with good reason. As fuel prices continue to skyrocket, the costs of heating and cooling our homes follow that trend. Enter the Green Roof. Placing a growing, living surface on the roof of a building can help insulate it from outside temperatures, reduce the wear and tear of the traditional roof, all while reducing the effects of urban heat islands. Seems like a win-win situation to me.

    Game | Life

Game | Life is a great blog about video games from the people who bring you Wired magazine. They have also been producing a great video blog on what appears to be a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Here's another episode for you. Enjoy!

    Studying the Night Sky

Here's a time lapse video of a telescope going through its routine of scanning the night skies. I like seeing the movements of the background through the dome. I'm pretty much a sucker for anything astronomy-related.

    Nintendo Super Fan!

This guy rocks! OK, at the very least, he makes other nerds feel good about themselves. haha He was up for five days, waiting to get a Wii. That's pretty damn hard-core! I probably would've been all weird and stuff, too, if I'd been subsisting on grape sodas and crap for the past week.

Speaking of the Wii, I'm glad I got mine at launch. Here we are, over a year later, and people are still having a hard time finding them. It's a good system. I especially like the the Virtual Console, which allows the system to emulate older hardware like the NES and Sega Genesis. If you're an old-school gamer like me, you'll appreciate the ability to download the old games for some serious nostalgia. I recommend "Gunstar Heroes" and "Toe Jam and Earl" for your initial downloads.

    Colbert Roasts Bush

Man, this is comic gold! I saw this a few years back, but decided to put it up on the page. Honestly, I'm not sure why they would have even invited Stephen Colbert to the president's dinner. Did the Administration think that it would earn Bush some "street cred" with the younger demographic? If so, then he truly got what he deserved. Interesting.

    The Bush Sweat Cam

So, Stephen Colbert is slamming the president, and one camera is trained on Dubya. It's great, because you know that Bush wants to shut him up. I'd say that this was karma, biting his butt for sneaking by the tough questions in the past.

  • Heroes

My heroes growing up were Spiderman, Batman, Zorro, and the Cisco Kid. When we grow up, we tend to forget about our heroes. Why is that? Maybe we should still look to those few who impact the world as models for our own lives.

    Steve Wozniak ..

I'd have to say that the Woz is as close as they come to a real-life hero. If you don't know him, you should. This guy practically started the personal computer industry. Woz is the patron saint of engineering. Well, if he isn't, he should be. He may not have the powers or the acrobatic stylings of the heroes that I followed as a kid, but his ideas and inventions will continue to have a huge impact on society for years to come.

    Steve Jobs ..

Steve is an interesting character who tends to polarize those around him. They either love him or hate him. Yes, I've heard that he can be a total jerk. However when you consider what he has accomplished, the pros easily outweigh the cons.

I remember tying my shoes at Macworld 2000 in New York City, when he and a slew of reporters came onto the show floor. That entourage almost ran me over, if it weren't for a friend who pulled me out of the way. I was a bit star struck, but I did manage to snap off a few crappy photos. I've heard of the infamous "reality distortion field" of his, and when he walked by, I think I could feel it in full force.

    Michael Moore ..

Yes, that Michael Moore. Many people despise him and even question his patriotism. That he stands up to authority and asks tough questions is near blasphemy for some folks. But shouldn't we all take a page from his playbook and question our leaders from time to time? After all, this is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. WE are the true leaders of this country, and we should be more proactive about the direction of the country.

About me:

..

What can I say? I play video games. I begged for a computer when I was a kid. I wanted a Commodore 64. Instead I got an Atari VCS (2600). I even tried to join the computer club at school, but needed a ride after school since I would miss the bus. I could have learned to be a programmer, but instead I merely developed an addiction to video games. Gee, thanks Mom! :P

I guess that wasn't too bad of a deal. After all, games helped me to improve my standardized test scores, and I developed a keen sense of hand-eye coordination. Or at least that's what I tell myself to justify buying those games at $50 a pop! :)

BTW, I also like observational astronomy. I don't do it as much as I once did or would like. It's too bad, really. I truly enjoy going to the Fort Davis/Alpine/Marfa area to observe the night sky and relax with a cool BEvERage. :) There are few things in this world that can match the pristine night sky of the Davis Mountains in West Texas.

Clean up time again. Stuff is in the archive. Howdy! I've been away for a while. I apologize for the lapse in updates. It's been an interesting Summer, which is nothing new. They've been like that for the past few years. In 2005 and 2006, my Summers were loaded with work and classes, as I decided to go back to school and finish my degree. Last Summer was a hectic one with all the wedding planning, the wedding, and the honeymoon. This Summer, we're working on buying another house. It's just one thing after another, but it's good to stay productive. More to come. Keep your fingers crossed. :)
