“Music is a funny thing- it has a strange power over people. I want my music to be for other people what the music I’ve listened to has been for me.”
Kelly Snyder speaks to us who have battled with love and lost. She puts into words what our hearts dare to say. “Ever-so-slightly smoky, there is a strength behind Kelly Snyder’s voice that belies its sheath of vulnerability (The Deli Magazine).” As soon as you press play, the sweetness of the piano is met with the bitterness of love-the-hard-way via a flawless representation of the melancholy of the human spirit. You travel to her side as she plays the piano teary-eyed and soulfully. Snyder forms a bond with her listener’s that builds a bridge of understanding. Based on her music, one would think Kelly is a rather dark individual. With an uncanny way of finding humor in all things, she actually exudes warmth, empathy and compassion, never taking herself too seriously at any given moment. When asked about her music, Snyder simply says: “Music is the language I’m most fluent in.”
Kelly recently just returned from several months overseas in Prague, Czech Republic, where she was invited to be the headlining musical act at Obcanska Plovarna, a well-respected club. Performing five nights a week solo on the piano and with a three-piece band, people fell in love with this girl from New York City. She had the pleasure of performing at all of the red-carpet events over the summer: Restaurant/club openings, Fashion TV parties, LOOK Magazine parties, and events for major television stations in the country. Completely out of her element, this was an experience Kelly thrived off of, being immersed in another culture, another way of expression.
Born in Oakland, CA, Kelly’s family relocated several years later to Southeastern Pennsylvania. Kelly always found comfort in expressing herself through arts and music, whether starting her professional acting career at age 10 or sneaking off from class in high school to write songs in the music rooms or singing jazz in the local restaurants of West Chester. Never quite feeling understood by her peers, she delved into theatre, which required all her time outside of her books. She started making weekend and summer trips to New York City at age 14 to professionally study both voice and acting, audition regularly and participate in showcases. She went on to study theatre at Syracuse University, where she really grew to take songwriting seriously. Leave it to a bad break up to wake up the soul. After starring as Eva Peron in the University’s production of Evita, she left a year and a half into it all, feeling determined and thirsty for the Big City and wanting people to hear her words. She starred in an Off-Broadway musical called The Alchemist (Peter Mills), was in the studio putting together her demo, all while playing the local café and club scene in the village not long after arriving.
In June 2004, she met producer Charles Newman (Magnetic Fields). Together they accomplished Snyder’s debut album, Oxygen (2005). “...she blows down the doors of personal space with trembling, rapturous melody (Peter Buchan, Splendid Magazine).” Her album got her regular rotation on college radio and gigs at some of NYC’s best music venues, Joe’s Pub, B.B. King’s, The Mercury Lounge, etc, as well as some colleges in the Northeast. Her song “Innocent” was picked up by several independent films, along with TNT’s hit TV show “Wanted” and the WB’s “Point Pleasant.”
Not liking the idea of selecting her influences, as Snyder feels all music has influenced her to some degree, she lists off Elliott Smith, Fiona Apple, Billie Holiday, Norwegian songbird Stina Nordenstam, and Coldplay as the few who have influenced her the most. Kelly currently lives in Manhattan where she is getting a band together now that she’s back in the states and is writing constantly. She's a Big Girl, now. All grown up. Even in her face, you can see a change. Her walk. But she's still, inside, the same little Asha. I swear, every now and then, I can hear her call "Mom", from behind a closed door, late at night. She's never quite content until she can curl into someone's warmth and fall asleep. Find safety in a heartbeat close to hers. She's cute that way. Always will be. I'm sure she misses you. Won't admit it in front of Casper (Has too much pride for that), But there are times, when she gazes out the window, squints her eyes in the sun, and remembers a different time. Remembers a voice... she once called HOME.
I Love You.. That was really sweet of you .. you made me smile and actually see you in a bigger light like wow this bitch is real.. Keep your head up and i'll pray for your situations.. stay strong .. im serious !!!
