diving into silence, longing, dark melody and stark texture, k c mckanzie’s appreciation of the unusual and marginal is made clear in her writing. her tone is a hard, timeless and above all honest one. hers is a bittersweet old-time flavour with a contemporary folk edge that bends its way into soft discord and gentle unease.
the press has tried to define her style in many ways.
her dry, simple writing and dark vocals do have a flavour of the ‘folk noir’; her appalachian arrangements (mckanzie accompanies herself on guitar and banjo) give a real flavour of the ‘neo-traditional, deeply rooted’ quality of her sound; the repeated assertion that she is ‘berlin’s answer to gillian welch’ truly is valid, yet somehow none of these descriptions offers enough to do the breadth of her work justice.
her third album ‘hammer and nails’ has cemented an already established demand for mckanzie to perform headlines and festival appearances in germany, austria, switzerland and the netherlands since its release. the album is simply gorgeous - static and subtle arrangements with plenty of detail reward the careful listener, while both lyrically and vocally mckanzie simultaneously soothes and unsettles. the accomplished and joyous live shows are no different, and quickly refute the possibility that mckanzie’s world lacks humour and light. with her musical partner Budi (double bass, banjo) she reduces the material to its basic elements of melody and story and injects it with an enjoyment and considerable charm that shines light into the darkest corners of her songs.
following the release of her fourth album. it is clear that her brand of euro-americana folk will delight audiences who appreciate songwriting at its most intimate. her work is at once dense and accessible, complex and stripped bare, and reflects the paradox of this mysterious yet communicative young singer from berlin who has a voice beyond her years.

“Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping... waiting... and though unwanted... unbidden... it will stir... open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love... the clarity of hatred... and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we'd know some kind of peace... but we would be hollow... Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we'd be truly dead.”
