They may be from America's heartland, but the women of the Kansas City Roller Warriors hardly are crying out for their Auntie Em and looking around for some punk dog named Toto.
Established in the summer of 2004, the KC Roller Warriors have three seasons of league play under their belts and are thirsty for blood. They reached one of their goals by getting awesome and crushing the competition at Nationals, in Austin TX, September 28-30 2007, with their stealthy skating, bruise-inducing blocking and combines - which every good girl from Kansas and Missouri knows how to drive.
- A Little Background -
The sport of Roller Derby was developed during the Great Depression and was very popular in the 1950s, but is perhaps best known for its hey-day during the 1970s. Roller Derby then fell out of pop culture’s eye, but is making a comeback in the new millennium. Kansas City’s league was founded in the summer of 2004 by two women, Mandy Durham and Brooke Leavitt. The two, along with a handful of other women, began practicing in a parking lot the summer of 2004.
By January 2005, the league held its exhibition bout. KCRW now has a season of inner league play under its belt and its All-Star team traveled in February 2006 to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the 2006 Dust Devil National Flat Track Derby Tournament. This was the first time the Roller Warriors played leagues from other cities. Out of the 20 leagues represented at the tournament, the KCRW All-Stars took Sixth Place and won many fans for their speedy jamming, mind-jarring blocks and clean competition.
The Roller Warriors promise to capture your heart and skate all over it - until it bleeds!
