KCSU is Colorado State University’s student-run radio station. In addition to serving our target audience, the university community, KCSU provides a unique opportunity for the students of Colorado State University to learn about radio in a fun and professionally inspired environment. KCSU’s mission statement is to serve the Colorado State University community.
The KCSU music format focuses on new college and alternative music. The music mix is established by the Program Director, Music Director, Programming Assistants and DJs. The music is selected to appeal to the 18-34 year-old audience interested in a daring, innovative, cutting-edge sound.
The fact that KCSU is a college radio station makes it a learning experience for those interested in music, radio, management, or those who just want experience in the radio field. While KCSU’s music is programmed during the prime time hours of the day (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.), DJs still have flexibility in everything they play. This freedom allows for an experimental, creative sound while still maintaining a quality, consistent sound. The radio station also provides experimental radio overnights. The DJs during this time get to play whatever they want as long as it complies with FCC regulations.
KCSU’s funding is comprised mainly of student fees. Because of the nature of this relationship, the primary goal of KCSU is to serve the Colorado State University community through quality programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to consistent musical programming, KCSU also provides news five times a day. KCSU runs Public Service Announcements every hour. The PSAs consist of information relevant to KCSU’s audience.
At 10,000 watts, KCSU is one of the largest college radio stations in the country with a listening area that reaches 250,000 people. KCSU can reach these people at home, in the car, even while skiing. Radio reaches people in ways and places that no other medium can. By serving the community in the manner in which we strive, KCSU can be the voice of Colorado State University students.
Featured Artist - Architecture in Helsinki
Let’s get one thing straight. Architecture in Helsinki is crazy. No, wait. Maybe they’re geniuses. Wait! Maybe not. Hmm…well, they certainly straddle that crazy/genius border.
AIH is one of the few bands that take music seriously and take themselves very lightly. How else could such a combination of humor and unique rhythms create such infectious pop? Drawing inspiration from nearly everything including funk, island music, indie rock, and their native Australia. .
In August the band will release their third album, Places Like This. AIH’s past albums brought us many pop gems like “Do The Whirlwind”, but also dipped into strange and demented child-like tunes a la “IT’s 5” and even some slower, melodic songs such as the opening of their last record, In Case We Die.
The new album is high energy all the time. Like the laser sfx used, this album is so focused and pure that it will burn a hole in the musically inept mind. The music: It’s crazy, it’s wild, hell, it’s in the fourth dimension, but it’s never alienating and always a blast. With a much-acclaimed live show and two solid albums, AIH has been poised to break out. Their third album is the best yet. Every song is a keeper and it rarely dips in to the weird and mindless AIH was prone to.
If you’re a fan (I’m looking at you Bruce Willis) you will not be disappointed. In fact, you’ll probably tell everybody you know about this band if you haven’t already. If you’re just discovering Architecture in Helsinki, you’re in for a crazy ride.

Record Review - New Pornographers
New Pornographers-"Challengers ”
For the newest release from the New Pornographers, “Challenges” is a very fitting title. The Supergroup, which includes members from Zumpanos, Evaporators and the Destroyers, have collaborated again to come out with the next evolution for the pornographers. Moving away from the gimmick of being a super group, Challenges helps transition the New Pornographers into a real band with real mature sound and music.
The album, unlike previous ones, has removed the gimmicky pop sound that large ensemble bands like this create. Their catchy hit single, “From blown Speakers,” is definitely a thing of the past. This new album centers more on a mature sound. Using more acoustic instruments and more emotional lyrics and layered vocals. Challenges uses four different lead vocals in the album. It does allow for the album to be new and fresh through the whole album, but sometimes makes it difficult to follow the album. Each voice is unique and pleasant. Songs like Adventures and solitudes, Unguided and Failsafe, feature all of the vocalists, but each one taking the lead on a different song which really adds a unique dynamic to each song that would have been lost with just one lead singer. The title track, Challengers, features Neko Case. This album relies heavily on making an older more thoughtful sound.
The song Myriad Harbor and All The Things That Go to Make Heaven and Earth tries to go back to the Pornographers roots by making a nice little upbeat happy songs. But the songs refrain from getting to crazy and they stay in a relative comfort zone. The Pornographers definitely are deterring from crazy sound and are trying to prove their ability not only as a gimmick or as a super group, but as a real band worthy of attention from the listeners. The pornographers are not afraid of the popularity of their real bands, but they want this side project to be just as well respected. Maybe that is why challenges is such a big push for that mature sound. Whatever the case, New Pornographers have grown up, and hopefully, their fans will grow up with them.
