One of the industry’s most highly sought after songwriters and producers,Kara DioGuardi is BMI’s 2006 Pop Songwriter of the Year, a 2007 SOCAN Award winner and a multi- Grammy nominated hitmaker. She has been awarded 10 BMI Pop Awards for having co-written the most performed songs on the radio.
Aside from songwriting, Kara DioGuardi also co-owns the Arthouse Entertainment, a publishing company that helps record companies, artists, songwriters and other music entities that need compositions, artists, productions and other music-related services.
Recently, Kara has joined American Idol as a fourth judge. She will sit alongside Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the judges' table and use her background as an award-winning songwriter and producer to praise or critique the wannabe hopefuls throughout the competition.
Though in the spotlight of American Idol, Kara has not always been in the music industry. She completed a degree in Political Science at the Duke University, but became a part of the music industry after securing a job at Billboard as an assistant to the publisher and editor, then shifting to advertising sales later on. While doing routine work at Billboard, Kara started writing her own songs at age 21. By 1995, she secured a record deal from MCA. Kara’s first album was then sent to pop star Paula Abdul, but it was Kylie Minogue who used the song “Spinning Around” that became top-charting single worldwide. Since then, Kara’s lyrical career became unstoppable.
In a 2005 interview, DioGuardi explained that she and Stewart were asked to write songs for The Pussycat Dolls in 2004. Instead, the pair ended up with material that DioGuardi described as resembling Fleetwood Mac. Although the collaboration did not produce the intended Pussycat Dolls songs, Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine encouraged the continuation of the project, and longtime DioGuardi partner John Shanks was brought in for album production duties. Another aspect of Kara's life today is her continued work with the Phoenix House, a non-profit substance abuse service organization. She contributes to recording studios in the facilities and helps teach the teens how to operate the equipment. (www.phoenixhouse.org)
