Keep It Together! Cosmic Boogie's Blurbs
About me:

Rich Deakin - Born in Leicester, 1965. After leaving school became a full-time wastrel and occasional disc jockey. By the mid-90s seriously needed to get shit together and completed a Masters thesis on the British underground press. Live in Cheltenham with girlfriend and two Persian cats, Maumau and Owsley.

Keep It Together! : Cosmic Boogie with the Deviants and Pink Fairies - the biography of legendary 1960s and 70s British underground bands - The Deviants and Pink Fairies.

THE LADBROKE GROOVE (edit)
by Mick Farren and Andy Colquhoun
<bgsound src="http://www.arsydd.f2s.com/Ladbrokegroove_edit.mp3" loop="false"> ..

Abridged version of Mick Farren's introduction to Keep It Together!
put to music, and recorded at Andy Colquhoun's Cyber Music Studios, Los Angeles, March 2007.

KEEP IT TOGETHER!

This is the remarkable story of London's anti social communal bands of the 1960s and 1970s, from the perspective of two of its most crucial exponents.

Fuelled by amphetamine psychosis and the music of Bob Dylan and the Fugs, The Deviants and Pink Fairies were bands of the people playing for free from flatbed trucks, and alternatively on bills alongside the likes of Led Zeppelin.

Keep it Together! tells of the musical and social movements key in shaping a London that had been swinging but was rapidly moving away from psychedelia into far more brutish territory. It is a tale that includes the Edgar Broughton Band, the Pretty Things, Tomorrow, Hawkwind, and a host of other influential bands and dodgy geezers, with many exclusive interviews and photographs.

Charles Plymell : The Benzedrine Highway Interview

"...He already had two volumes of poetry, Neon Poems and Apocalypse Rose out when in 1971 City Lights published his seminal novel, Last of The Moccasins. This novel grips, gleams and glistens with his hobohemian prose-style; spinning tales of his life in and around Wichita, his road trips to and from the West Coast along the Rt. 66 Benzedrine Highway and beyond, his crazy Hipster years and the boho life of his elder sister Betty..."

Well we hope so...haven't been asked to play yet. Still we could always take inspiration from the pink fairies and...play for free outside. (outside a free festival!!!) Set up a Phun city up at the camp site or something.
Looking foward to reading your book by the way!

The City Kids / Deviants with a cast of thousands. Lives and crimes finally put to print whooooowhooo… at bleeding last! I suppose Farren couldn’t really do it being a Fairy himself “no pun intended”, so it needed a man of good standing, not an insider nor a music hack but a fan yes a fan in the form of one RICH DEAKIN and what fitter tribute could be embellished onto (the underground crusaders from Ladbroke grove popular peoples freedom front) or as a python sketch may have said “wot did the hippies ever do for us!!? Well pigs from Uranus this bunch of sweeties did quite a lot. I got into the fairies at the tender age of fifteen 1975 (see my biog, PEOPLE CALL YA CRAZY WHEN YA TALK LIKE THAT) yep cheap arse book plug …but hey Rich plugged his on my review. Anyway as you probably know the Fairies broke up and got back together more times than a Nick Cotton meets the Dingalls in a street fighting pig punching brawl in Eastenders and never got round to recording as much material as we the fans would have enjoyed but hey ho that’s life. But I still shiver at Larry Wallace’s metallic guitar riffs Paul Rudolf’s long long feedback solo’s that you just cant get away with these days “mores the pity being a bit of an old plucker myself” and Sandy’s sturdy bass keeping the sometimes chaotic live set in order, not to mention the drummers Twink unt Russell Hunter. There’s an introduction by Mick Farren and you can hear the same on Riches myspace site but set to music from Andy Colquhoun. The biog itself is written in great detail from the early beginnings of Farren’s Deviants up to the post punk and beyond bands such as the Lightening Raiders etc, telling the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth be it good or bad. Some people come off better than others but all in all I think “as only being an outsider fan myself” it’s very well documented and as accurate as you need to get. A story long over due and needed telling with some great insight and story telling from all
Laurie
