About me:

Curious about the simple message conveyed by those black and white billboards and bus cards?

Quite simply, Keep Louisville Weird is a grassroots public awareness campaign, begun by a small but growing coalition of independent Louisville business owners who want to encourage people to think about buying local first.

Louisville is a special place filled with lots of unique things to see and do, interesting places to shop and terrific places to eat and drink that you wont find in any other city in America. Your patronage of these businesses helps Louisville retain its own special flavor.

Not only is a certain amount of civic pride on the line here, a lot of commerce is at stake as well. A recent study in Austin, Texas clearly contrasted the economic impact of money spent at locally-owned independent businesses to that same amount of money spent at chain stores. The percentage of money spent in locally-owned businesses that actually stays in the community is far greater than the percentage of money spent in the national chains. Even minor spending habit changes can contribute millions to the local economy.

Who I'd like to meet:

What can you do to help Keep Louisville Weird? Its pretty simple, really. Be a wise consumer just patronize independent, locally-owned businesses wherever and whenever possible, and encourage others to do the same. Going out for coffee? Check out a local java house before automatically heading to Starbucks. Headed for the mall again? Suggest a trip down Bardstown Road or Frankfort Avenue instead. Looking for a good restaurant? There are lots of local options from budget to extravagant (hint: find a comprehensive listing online try Robin Garrs excellent HotBytes site or check out the back pages of any print edition of Louisville Magazine). In the mood for some new music or movies? Your independent retailers will have a much larger selection than those appliance stores that just happen to sell music and video. Shopping for a special gift? Check out one of our numerous galleries for everything from paintings and sculpture to apparel and jewelry, or consider something truly unique to Louisville, such as a handcrafted Louisville Stoneware collectible or perhaps a personalized bat from the Louisville Slugger Museum. Just headed out to the grocery? Think about one of the locally-owned gourmet or ethnic food shops, or make a little extra effort to try one of the seasonal farmers markets. There are locally-owned options for just about anything you can find at a chain store, so just take a moment to think before you open your wallet.

As for spreading the word, you can find Keep Louisville Weird stickers and t-shirts at several of the businesses represented on our Links page, including ear X-tacy.

Are you a business owner who'd like to join the movement to Keep Louisville Weird? Or a member of the media who'd like to learn more? Please email jennifer@keeplouisvilleweird.com.

You got it; I do it whenever I can. We have several local businesses in the Carbondale/Makanda area where I live. We have a Neighborhood food Co-op, too, that many of us have bought into. We also have a Farmer's Market in spring, summer, and fall.

Don't have it recorded yet, but one of the songs I wrote last year celebrates a local ecological farmer in our neck of the woods, too, and the beautiful produce he grows. I got to work for him one summer, and out of that grew my song "Down on Patrick's Farm.
    "

Well, gotta go. Take care, and keep on keeping Louisville weird. I'll do my part to keep Carbondale, IL weird, too.
    :)

    Best wishes,
    Candy

Dear Keep Louisville Weird: Thank you for YourFriendship. My eight-year-old-peace-activist son Axil's quest for World Peace Before 2021 is gaining momentum! I'm so proud of him. Please embrace him AND his song "World Peace Before 2021" which he sings beautifully.
His performance can be seen on MySpace, his webpage www. worldpeacebefore2021. com and/or YouTube (by searching his name Axil Kollist.) It is my intention to post a new video of him singing his song every few months so people can watch his talent grow as impressively as the momentum for his quest! I'm sharing two photos with you. The first is of my son distributing his free world peace bumperstickers and the second photo is of him singing his song “World Peace Before 2021” at Maui's Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Day Festivities in January 08.
    Best regards, Axil Kollist’s mom
