Kehau Kahananui is a dynamic and powerful vocalist/musician who blends soul, blues and life itself into a personal style with unique tone and expressive depth. Her musical loves are wide ranging, from baroque to modern period art music (including opera) to blues, soul, jazz, rock, punk and country, to the Hawaiian, Polynesian and Mexican folk music of her childhood. Her voracious ear has been a great musical asset and she’s always listening for the beautifully played phrase. Kehau began playing music (primarily piano and Hawaiian percussion) at a young age and her mother has said that she’s been singing since the day she was born.
Over the years, she has worked with many musicians, bands, songwriters and producers for both live performances and recording sessions, including music for television and commercials. She is an experienced lead as well as background vocalist and is comfortable in a variety of styles: blues, soul, R & B, rock, country, jazz. Artists she’s worked with include Linda Perry, Louise Goffin, Kevin Hunter, Wiretrain, Andy Prieboy, Craig Lee, Deacon Jones, Mickey Champion, Nathan Wang, and 48 Windows, to name a few. Kehau’s live performances are vivacious, soulful and fun. In the studio, she’s known for working quickly and ably, yet with sensitivity to the needs of the project.
Kehau is also an active member of Hula Hālau Keali'i O Nālani where she enjoys studying Hawaiian chanting and drumming in addition to dancing hula.
