  • Bio

Like New York City, where he lives and works, Keith Paine is smooth and gritty in all the right places. Mixing dirty grooves, vibey sexuality, and what the NY Press calls "serious hooks," Keith is digging deep ground with his sultry mixture of raw blues, americana and indie rock. He’s also establishing himself as an essential new artist, writer and producer. Take a sip of your drink, close your eyes and imagine if Eddie Vedder was born in the Delta and spent his formative years on the Lower East Side, and you'll begin to get a taste of what Keith’s all about. It's no shock that Keith and his music are consistently attracting new fans and an eclectic mix of kindred spirit A-list players, including blues harp legend Charlie Musselwhite, keyboardist Rob Clores (The Black Crowes, Jesse Malin), trombonist Clark Gayton (Levon Helm), and Grammy-winning producer Jay Newland (of Norah Jones fame), who helmed Keith's first record. Paine’s made recent appearances at Le Poisson Rouge (Trudie Styler's RAN benefit) and Rockwood Music Hall in New York City, performed at festivals like CMJ and the madness of SXSW, signed on to star and write music for the upcoming independent film "Coward," and gone from turning heads to headlining shows. Paine has also shown that his musical touch knows no boundaries of genre or culture. In 2006, Keith co-wrote and sang with African singing star Ramatou Diakite on an east-meets-west recording called "Maba". The result was a record of complete originality and surprising beauty. He later performed songs from the record with Diakite at Summerstage in Central Park. Paine’s also co-written, recorded and produced "Sunyata," an ambient meditation CD due out in October on his independent Nimble Records imprint. His latest release, "Speakeasy" (Nimble), was recorded with Ken Rich at Grand Street Recording in Brooklyn, NY. Letting his multi-talented band carry him forward, Paine captures an energy that can only be created when you put righteous players together in a room to play great songs, then get out of the way. Like his live shows, the self-produced "Speakeasy" is a trip through your soul, with edgy guitar, bad-ass beats, lap steel and some old-school attitude. Keith tops it off with powerful, intimate vocals and his subtle acoustic guitar. Then there's his presence...where words just don't seem to cut it. Check him out for yourself, you'll be real happy you did.
