  • Bio

Vocalist, guitarist, and harmonica player, Keith The Captain Gamble's heart and soul is rooted in the BLUES. The Captain is a consummate performer whose talents are both exceptional and diverse! He can charge his performances with Funk, Rock, Jazz, R&B, and Soul, but will always lead his audience back home to the Blues. The Captain's artistic development followed the same direction of so many Blues Greats. From a very young age, The Captain took to the electric guitar and harmonica naturally. He allowed his love for the guitar to be nurtured by his father's extensive music collection. Growing up, The Captain listened to many giants in Jazz and Blues. Summers spent in New Orleans and Mississippi allowed The Captain to be introduced to the harmonica by his uncle. In order to hone his skills, The Captain as a teenager, began sitting in on jazz and blues gigs throughout Harlem. Subsequently, he became a band leader to such groups as Bodacious, and the Blues Cruise. The Captain made his European debut tour of Athens, Greece in '98 with Blues vocalist Scarlett Moore. The summer of ..99, The Captain opened with Olu Dara at Central Park Summerstage for the Robert Cray Band. He has also performed at New York City venues such as: B.B. King's, Chicago B.L.U.E.S., CBGB's, the Russian Tea Room, the Apollo Theater, The Groove, St. Nick's Pub; and Warmdaddy's in Philadelphia. The Captain and his current band, The Brand Nu Gypsies, appeared regularly in Greenwich Village. The Captain frequently appears as the featured artist at the legendary St. Nick's Pub in Harlem, USA. The Captain also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the City College of NY. His artistic expressions include compositions in poetry and paintings in oils. In 1972, his mural "Hypothalamus" received 1st prize from the Bronx Council on the Arts. Manhattan District Leader, Theresa Freeman, recognized The Captain's contributions to sustaining the culture of Harlem by awarding him with the "Community Courageous" award. During public schools' Black History Month programs, The Captain will provide his audience with an enlightening history of the Blues. To this end he is featured in the documentary "From the Root to the Fruit - A Chronicle of the Blues." This documentary elaborates and encapsulates the many facets and offshoots of the Blues art form. 2001 was the year The Captain applied his many talents to film and the theater. The Captain made his acting debut in the stage production of Kai Adwoa's "Every Time I Look Up" under the direction of Lloyd Richards protege' Chuck Patterson. In Till Terror's independent film "Searching for the Duke", a scene was written expressly for The Captain exhibiting not only his skill on the harmonica, but his acting ability as well. The film was selected by the Tribeca Film Festival. He was also lead guitarist on tour with the McDonald's Gospelfest, 2001. This led to his run at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center as lead guitarist in the gospel musical "Your Arms Too Short to Box With God", starring Cissy Houston and Melba Moore. In 2002,The Captain completed a three-nation European tour where he performed gospel, jazz and the Blues. The Captain adapted his "From the Root to the Fruit" documentary for a theatrical stage production at the Flushing Town Hall, NYC, in June. His teaching credits includes ongoing guest instructor for Jazzmobile. Since returning from the 2003 Debrecen Jazz Festival outside of Budapest, Hungary, The Captain leads a performance and lecture series on the Blues as a recurring guest artist for LaGuardia Community College in NYC. Also, in his "spare time", The Captain is a free-lance columnist for the Harlem Times newspaper featuring world-renowned artists in Blues, Jazz and Gospel, sharing conversations with Freddie Hubbard, Chaka Khan, Paul Schafer, Gato Barbieri, Hilton Ruiz and Bobbie Blue Bland. In 2004, The Captain returned to Paris and an Embassy tour in Lusaka, Zambia. The Captain was again requested by the US State Dept. in 2005 to tour Africa once more, this time in Cameroon & Equatorial Guinea. The State Dept. estimates that his performance was seen by over 12 million people! The Captain's most recent endeavors include a New Year's 2007 gig at a 7-star hotel/resort in the Middle Eastern nation of Dubai & a New York stage acting engagement in the Evern Gillard-Randolph play 'Dinner At Grandma's'. He signed on to reprise his highly acclaimed role of Uncle Willie in 2009. In addition to all this artistic prowess, he has demonstrated mastery of the martial arts by holding a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. "What's My Name?"... The Captain's debut CD, features serveral original Blues, jazz and gospel compositions written and arranged by The Captain. In 2009, the US State Dept. recommissioned The Captain and his band, in a 3rd tour to Africa, to W.E.B. DuBois home in Accra, Ghana to star in a performance honoring the Inauguration of Pres.Barack Obama. With such boundless energy and talent, an encounter with Keith" The Captain" Gamble is an experience you would not want to miss! ....
