University of Arizona writes about Keith Wann November 2007 - By: Siobhan Daniel
A comedian used sign language to convey his experiences as a hearing person growing up with deaf parents Saturday night before a packed audience in the South Ballroom of the Student Union Memorial Center.
Keith Wann, a child of deaf adults, or CODA, performed "Watching Two Worlds Collide," a show about the merging of deaf and hearing worlds from the perspective of a child in the middle of it.
The audience
was made up mostly of interpreters, CODAs and the deaf. Across the room, signing and talking went .. the show began.
"I have seen a part of Wann's performance on the Internet, and I heard he is really entertaining in person," said Sydney Corbett, an American Sign Language interpreter.
Brandy Resnick, a UA alumna and ASL interpreter, has seen the videos of Wann perform and said, "He is hilarious."
This was the first time Resnick saw him perform live, and she said she was looking forward to his interpretations of music.
Wann used ASL to interpret many songs, including Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." He explained that his love of music comes from his parents blasting the radio in his ears as an infant, when they were trying to discover if he was hearing or deaf.
When children are first born, hearing parents cry if they find out their child is deaf, he signed.
Deaf parents cry when they find out their child is hearing, he added.
As a child, Wann signed, his parents wanted the doctor to pierce his eardrums so he would be deaf like them.
"I remember when I was a little guy, I wanted to go the deaf school," Wann signed. "My mom said, 'You're hearing. You are going to the hearing school.'
"I answered, 'I don't wanna go to hearing school. That is discrimination.'
"My mom said, 'Too bad, you're going.' "
He complained to his mother that the people at the hearing school are "all handicapped" because they could not sign.
"My mom said, 'That is your culture, go,' " Wann signed. "Then I became a hearing person."
New to the hearing world, it took Wann time to adjust. He recalled when his teacher informed his parents that he needed speech therapy, he said. His parents became very excited and began taking pictures of him along with the note from the teacher.
Wann's wild energy and entertaining facial expressions kept the crowd laughing throughout the performance.
The Disability Resource Center, the Sign Language Educational Interpreter Training Program and the Social Justice Leadership Center came together to bring Wann's performance to the UA, said Cindy Volk, a professor in the College of Education's Special Education, Rehabilitation and School Psychology program.
Wann has been an extra in movies and television shows and has appeared on the television show "Law and Order," Volk said as she introduced him to the crowd.
"I have deaf parents," Volk added. "That is why I am excited to have Keith Wann (at the UA)."
3 ASL comedians get together and cause havoc on the stage in the goal of producing something that looks like ASL...

Who I'd like to meet: Who is Keith Wann?
Keith Wann, a child of deaf adults, is one of America’s funniest ASL comedians. Keith tours around the ASL Nation performing his one man show “Watching Two Worlds Collide” rated G to Adult Humor, and as a Storyteller for Festivals featuring family and children stories in ASL.
Keith has gone Hollywood and been on a few TV shows as an extra, including Law and Order and Court TV and also appeared in Mosdeux's Resonare as the Demented Apple Farmer...and just finished filming another film playing a deranged prison convict.
Keith is working on a collection of CODA stories for a book and plans on filming his 2nd DVD with all new material soon. Keith also teaches workshops for interpreters to analyze lyrics and ASL. From this he hopes to develop an ASL music show.
Keith has worked solo and in collaboration with other great ASL artists bringing to stage Coda stories, Deaf culture, Improv, Sketch comedy, and ASL student bashing. Keith lives in Brooklyn, NY and works part-time as an interpreter certified CI CT and NIC:Master. Keith just finished a week long program at Juliard on interpreting Broadway plays and plans to continue exploring more options in the performing arts as an interpreter and artist.
Come and enjoy a night of storytelling and Deaf Culture. Laugh with Keith as he takes you on a hilarious "visual" journey to describe his childhood experiences. Come learn about the Deaf and Hearing Worlds and how they often clash with the help of a mischievous child of deaf adults…
Keith Wann is an acclaimed American Sign Language (ASL) performing artist who has been captivating and amusing audiences with his controlled chaos and total pandemonium comedy explosions on stage, often leaving his laughing audiences gasping for breath. Wann has quickly established a reputation for his wacky, off-the-wall stories that ring true with CODAs everywhere and are equally funny for other members of the Deaf community.
Born hearing to Deaf parents in California, Keith grew up living in both the hearing and Deaf worlds, and has been able to create unique perspectives on the ways of both worlds. This has evolved into a one-man show, “Watching Two Worlds Collide,” which takes a humorous, almost shocking, look at both worlds.
“The world needs more laughter. I grew up on traditional ASL storytellers and wanted to see a change in ASL comedy. I wanted to show that comedy could be presented in ASL, the entire body, and facial grammar. I also wanted to include some music skits to show obvious clashes of the two worlds.”
”My show describes my experiences of growing up as a hearing child with deaf adults and about learning what it means to live in two worlds (Deaf and Hearing). It is about truly discovering that my parents were considered different than my friend’s parents from mainstream society and trying to use that to my advantage to get away with trouble, but in the end realizing parents are all the same, and they always know best.
It is also about learning to live simultaneously in these two worlds with different cultures and balancing between the two, sometimes as an ambassador and sometimes as an observer.
I also prefer to sign my show, rather than voicing for myself, making it fully accessible to my parents, CODAs and the Deaf community, and then adding a voice interpreter to let the hearing audience follow along.”
“Keith Wann's combination of amazingly expressive language and his unique sense of humor is nothing short of comedy magic," says Crom Saunders, a playwright and actor from Sacramento.
Gary Sanderson, an interpreter and CODA of Northridge, California, however, Has a slightly different perspective. "If more deaf parents see Wann's show, they will start raising us CODAs different!"
"The only way you can watch Wann without cracking up is if you're injected with enough Novocain to make your entire face and mind numb," says Wenda Whalen of Sacramento
"A true hilarious replay of a Coda boy's experience in which we would not dare want the world to see unless your that curious. Oh my God, what's he doing? He is exposing me and my brother's coda experiences which is truly hilarious! Anyone who wants the true Coda culture experience have got to see your hilarious uninhibited show!!" Molly Bowen, coda interpreter – Sacramento
" I laughed until I cried" -Sign Language student
" A delightful experience in Sign Language and voice" -Theater Director
" Wonderful Deaf and Hearing entertainment" -Deaf Community leader
" He can really shake his 'groove thang." -Coda Interpreter
" HE SAID WHAT???"-Keith Wann's mother
