General
As a result of my personal traveling experiences as well as through providing education to stylists and consumers out in the field, I have become more and more aware of the growing desire for [non-Black] stylists and salon owners to learn more about ethnic hair care and how products and services differ from that used in salons with predominantly White clientele. Similarly, I have also learned more about the growing need for women of color, who reside in predominantly White communities, to find quality stylists adept at working with ethnic hair types. Because I place great importance on the need for stylists to expand their skill sets to include proficiencies in working with all hair types, I have grown extremely frustrated (especially as a representative of a worldwide manufacturing conglomerate) at how under-represented and under-valued women of color are in this multi-billion dollar industry to which we are major contributors.
My goal (though very lofty) is to be a catalyst for facilitating change, on a global scale, in how the beauty industry sees and values women of color. If it sees the (monetary) value in providing services specific to the needs of women of color, it would logically follow that the visual imagery it would have to use to appeal to these consumers would have to change as well; therefore, having to redefine many of our archetypal images of beauty, making them more diverse and more inclusive.
