My Current Project:
Late Return:
1989 Marquette, MI:
Twelve-year-old Eryk Ryynanen disappeared without a trace on his way home from a friend's house in 1984.
In 1988, his remains were found in coal chute number 18 of Marquette's Lower Harbor Ore Dock. The police concluded that he had accidentally fallen the 40 feet to his death, despite an extreme fear of heights and closed the case; but Eryk didn't fall he was murdered.
With the help of a library book he had in his possession, at the time of his death he enlists Gerta Auchinkloss, a library borrower, to help him prove it and finally win justice.
The Inscription:
1990 Marquette, MI:
This will be the second book in the series.
St. Bartholomew Series:
In the fall of 1977, I was walking to school when a man tired to get me into his car. Luckily I was walking Outer Drive, a main thoroughfare, or he might have tried to snatch me. This was the height of the Oakland County Child Killer’s reign of terror in Michigan and even though I lived in Wayne County it wasn’t much of a stretch that this could have been him.
I was REALLY freaked out, and while I didn’t say anything at school that day, I told my mom that night. She told me that I had to tell my teacher and the principal because he could come after somebody else. The next day I called Mrs. Fisher out into the hallway after attendance. I told her what he did and said along with as much as I could remember about his car and what he looked like. She took me to the office where I was asked to repeat what happened to our principal Sister Albina. I just couldn’t bring myself to say those things to a nun!
Sister was wonderful. She took my hand and said, “Now Kelly I know you don’t mean to say those things; but I have to know so I can tell the police.”
After the police report was made, I returned to the classroom alone. I opened the door and discovered Raymond standing beside it. He had a strange look on his face so I gave him a “what’s your deal” look and brushed past him.
“Are you all right?”
I stopped and turned to him.
“I was listening at the door. We all know. Are you all right?” He looked like he was going to cry.
“Nobody was supposed to know who the student was!” Then I looked at my class. The desk rows faced each other boys near the door and girls near the window. My eyes fell on Kathy and as I looked toward the closet in the rear of the room my eyes landed on Tony and Leslie beyond him. To a person, they looked at me like they were lucky to see me alive.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” I ran to my seat, and if I could have, I would have crawled under my desktop.
They never knew it back then; but they saved my life that day. Things were really bad at my parent’s house and I had been contemplating either running away or suicide. I hadn’t made any definite plans at the time but I stopped even considering those alternatives on that day because I realized that my class cared about me as much I cared about them. I’d all ready felt that the school was my home and now I had a family as well.
My classmates were to intervene a number of other times to save me throughout my life and give me the family support I lacked. The St. Bartholomew’s series is my attempt to give something back to them and to the school we called home and the saint who made it all possible. I love you guys!

St. Bartholomew's Children Blurb:
Detroit, MI 1976
When low enrollment threatens the closure of St. Bartholomew School, the students take action to save it. But white elephant sales, candy sales and pizza parties, aren’t producing the needed cash. They pray each day for a miracle. Then during a horseplay accident, an ancient religious medallion is discovered hidden in the school. Many are convinced it’s a sign. Will the Rams be able to unlock the medallion’s secrets in time to save their school?

Greetings from Sussex, and I thank you for adding my name to your list of "friends." Perhaps you will be interested to hear that my literary agent, Ms King, has cajoled me into participating in a program she is calling "Fifteen Weeks of Bees," which will tie together the fifteenth anniversary of our first collaboration, The Beekeeper's Apprentice, and the publication of our newest venture in May, The Language of Bees. Appropriately, "Fifteen Weeks" will join my efforts on MySpace with hers on her web site and blog. Please join us starting on February 1.
