Influences
My own experiences influence me the most. Music has always been a means to express not emulate...(as far as cop-outs go, that one sounded really profound, don't you think??)
Here are some bands I like to listen to though - in no particular order: White Stripes, Racheal Yamagata, Cold War Kids, Silversun Pickups, The Cure, Jeff Buckley, Led Zepplin, Lucinda Williams, Pearl Jam, Morphine...
Sounds Like
nothing you've heard before, hopefully. But if you have, please let me know so I can notify my copy-write attorny. Many thanks...
I'm Kelly Stratton and I write this crap: the songs, the music, the ringing endorsements....
I've been fascinated with the guitar (and really shiny things) since I was very young, but didn't take lessons until I was 15. I didn't start writing anything meaningful to me until I was in college (believe it or not, I have an Engineering Degree) and bought a $150 black, acoustic Alvarez (still have it...it lives under my bed). While electric guitars offer their own feel and creative opportunities (and hearing loss....what?), I've always been able to write best on an acoustic (I favor my Martin now...SHHH...don't tell the others!), which often automatically vaults me to "folk" status in some minds (hippies mostly) until people actually hear my stuff (then they pass out from lusty excitement). I don't know what style you'd call my music (unless Super Awesome is a musical genre) and honestly I panic a little in my head any time someone asks me (so I punch them) because I draw a complete blank (then again, I'm blonde). I've never tried to emulate or copy (except for the Bionic Woman), I've only aspired to create (single tear...slowly rolling down my cheek *sniff*). Ultimately, I only know what I like and what I don't (which is everything and nothing...or...nothing and everything?...I'll get back to you). Hopefully, we'll see eye to eye on the songs I've written...(or I'll tell your momma!)
When I'm not playing solo (which is always), I'm accompanied by my Punch Drunk Boys. They are: Alan Biehn - drums, Mick Swan - bass, Jason White - guitar, Joe Bonner - keys, and Rick Franklin - slide guitar.
