Kelvin Sholar is an American pianist, composer, band-leader, educator, label owner and publisher. Sholar's unique sound was perhaps summed up in press best by Artforum International, the world's leading art magazine. They cited Sholar in "Best of Music" along with (Kanye West and Leonard Cohen) as eight of ten top musical acts: "Opening with a Jelly Roll Morton rag, this exceptional producer and keyboardist soon transitioned into a body of original solo piano material that evoked Kevin Saunderson as powerfully as it did Cecil Taylor. Time stopped. (Gavin Russom)" A fourth generation musician, Kelvin Sholar has been awarded over ten musical awards. He is active in the intersection of European Classical and Electronic music, as documented in his acclaimed work with Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald on "Recomposed Vol. 3", adapting the work of Herbert Von Karajan, Ravel (Bolero, Rhapsody Espagnole), and Mussorgsky (Pictures At An Exhibition) for the world's most respected classical label: Deutsche Grammophon. Sholar is currently working on adaptations of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Firebird Suite featuring Greg Osby, Carl Craig, Jonathan Robinson and Jaimeo Brown for acclaimed New York label Motema. Sholar is one of the brightest young Jazz musicians; he is often compared to Cecil Taylor and Art Tatum for his amazing technique and solo interpretations. Sholar's acclaimed solo piano recitals in both Hradec Klove and Prague (Czech) were recorded and broadcast on Czech National Radio for several months (available as free download on site). Sholar and his group have performed worldwide across America, Asia, Europe and Africa. Kelvin Sholar has been awarded: Best of Music (#8 of 10)/ Artforum International (2009), IAJE Outstanding Service To Jazz Education (2005), Winner of Scholarships from James Tatum Foundation For The Arts (1989 and 1990), Winner of the Michigan Bach Festival Competition (1990), IAJE Outstanding musician in Montreaux/Detroit Jazz Festival (1991), Outstanding musician in Aquinas Jazz Festival- (1992), Best Soloist, and Best Band in WEMU/Heritage Jazz Festival (1993), Outstanding pianist at The Clark Terry Jazz Camp (1994), Outstanding musicianship/ Elmhurst Jazz Festival (1995 and 1996), Outstanding musicianship/ Wichita Jazz Festival (1995 and 1996). Sholar is also an author and educator. He has written "the Sholar System", a privately printed book on his system of musical education, and Sholar has given master classes on music in many important international schools- including: the Phillipos Nakas Conservatory (Athens, Greece), Cite de la Musique (Marseilles, France), North Carolina Central University (Durham, NC, USA), Kyo Rei Hall (Tokyo, Japan), Escola International (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Porto Jazz school (Porto, Portugal), and Columbia University (New York, USA).
