Berkeley songwriter Ken Mahru sleeps in a crowded bedroom recording studio among a hodgepodge of instruments, recording gear, and albums. His songs are personal, revealing himself, his relationships, and his dreams; musically residing somewhere in the shadow of Weezer, Roy Orbison, and the Monkees. Having played in bands since his teens, Ken honed his songwriting, singing, and instrumental skills the old fashioned way, with hours upon hours of practice and performance.
Performing acoustic shows around the Bay Area solo, and with his band the New Incredibles, has kept Ken busy. Ken recently organized a week long West Coast Tour with his Songfight friends. Always writing and recording, he has added many new original songs available for free download on his band’s website, http://kni.songhole.org.
Ken arrived in the Bay Area in 1998 with dreams of playing music but no one to play with. He began playing his own songs with whomever or whatever was available. Blowing the dust off his old four track recorder; he bought a portable sequencer to use as a back up band and pressed the record button. He kept writing, recording, and performing as often as possible. This philosophy has recently led him to performances at the Missouri Lounge in Berkeley, the Nomad Cafe in Oakland, as well as shows in Los Angeles, Austin, Seattle, and Boston.
Not only a solo performer, Ken drums in Abandoned Love Records recording artist Parker Street Cinema, whose recent debut full-length album has seen much positive review and airplay. He drums, plays keyboards, and records with Tiny Robots which features members of the New Incredibles. Always contributing to the www.songfight.org internet community Ken has numerous other collaborations with musicians all over the world.
Each morning Ken wakes up to his beloved Gibson acoustic guitar and Fender Rhodes electric piano. He puts pen to paper trying to write words that are honest and true. He sings his songs alone in his room with the TV on while preparing for new shows, new fans, and new opportunities. He will be performing next at the Nomad Cafe in Oakland on May 31st, 2008.
