Ken Michaels looks like Lou Reed minus the make up and the misanthropic attitude. In fact, Ken Michaels is nothing if not of pleasurable disposition. His songs possess all the innocence of The Boy Least Likely To but Michaels voice recalls comparisons to the likes of Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave (if he weren’t always singing about murder). When Michaels stopped by the studio he performed his songs at their barest of bones, backed only by the occasional bellow of the bass.??Michaels has worked the Boston scene inside and out for the last twenty years, with a diversity of genres under his belt. His most recent album (released in 2006) Last of Its Kind plays like a sing-a-long for a generation of listeners too wise to think Art Garfunkle is still cool, but who secretly listen to 1980’s Paul Simon. Michaels’ folk is heartbreaking without the devastation. Pop with a soul. During his set Michaels performed “Crazy,” which has a deceptively cheerful rhythm adjoined to sad lyricisms.
