Kenny is a singer/songwriter from Ontario, Canada, with a grassroots following that is surely destined to grow much wider. This is his first full album and shows a well developed talent for writing a memorable lyric, a catchy tune, a groovy riff, and embedding them in a variety of styles based on the finest examples of '70s and early '80s rock. David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Paul Weller, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan are all in there, and enjoying the mix. Ignore the "Baby I Love You" lyric from the opener, and you discover a bold, slightly gravely voice which suits the chosen style perfectly. The songs are reflective, sometimes bitter-sweet, often personal: "Mommy" is a potent and emotional tribute. The guitar playing is creative, honest and full of feeling: check the Gilmour-esque solo of "I'll Be Good". The budget production is actually a big gulp of fresh air amidst the pollution of slick compressed pop. The drums are open, loose even, and expressive. The dynamics of the guitars (acoustic frequently mixing with electric) are felt, not just heard, as every note has an energy and clarity sadly lacking in many (most?) modern mass-manufactured rock releases. Remember all that is good about guitars, songwriting and rock and rediscover them here. If you like to find emerging new artists before everyone else does, then look no further. Review by Pauline Cote..............................................
To set the scene of my words... music is EVERYTHING to me.... *EVERYTHING*. As a budding music producer, I listen to every note and always with the best headphones so that I don't miss a single sound. Add to that, I'm very particular about my rock and nothing seems ever to measure up to the thousands of hours I've vegetated to the extraordinary sounds of Pink Floyd.
Allow me to re-count the experience of hearing the song I'LL BE GOOD…
I gear up with headphones and plan to multi-task while it plays (as I multi-task through everything in life -- smile). But the song quickly captures my undivided attention. I am compelled to lean back, eyes closed, and savour the experience. As it plays on, I'm waiting for the romance to end, as often does with indie artists. But the romance continues! The song seduces my senses into a sonic escape that removes me from dull circumstances. I feel like I'm 18 again and vegging out to the sounds of Floyd. This is REALLY GOOD STUFF, I think to myself. The picture of a guy with acoustic guitar is deceptive because this is a REALLY *BIG* SOUND!! How many members in that band, I wonder. The drummer hits forcefully like Bonzo. The female vocals are beautiful and soothing. Man this is REALLY GOOD! The lyrics are commanding too; a sensitive part of my spirit is touched as I contemplate those words. Then I check to see how much time is left. It's a great experience and I'm not anxious for it to end. Oh, good, it's a long song! And then I sink back into the escape of it all. It sounds original but reminds me of Pink Floyd in all the best ways. It has the power to provide escape - that was always the gift of Floyd. This song has that power too. It is forceful and gentle at the same time. Crashing, yet soothing.
Thanks for that experience. Please extend my kudos to the rest of your band and feel free to quote me as often as you like.
Your music is amazing and I'll continue to explore it in a manner that allows it to be savoured one song at a time.
Cheers!
