"Is the documentary hagiography? Kensinger told the proprietors that they probably will "kill him after we see it.''                     ....

- The San Francisco Chronicle, February, 2006

"Bolerium" captures a day-in-the-life at one of America's most important independent bookstores - Bolerium Books - run from a hidden location in the heart of San Francisco's immigrant/radical Mission District.

This 23 minute portrait is a humorous exploration of the store, its diverse staff and the wild array of customers who frequent its shelves. Filmed in a dynamic handheld style, the documentary captures the caffeinated energy that has driven this store for the last 25 years.

"My preference is the general public doesn't know about us..."

- John Durham, owner of Bolerium Books

A whirlwind of activity, Bolerium Books is dedicated to preserving the history of the world's social movements. They house the largest collections of Gay & Lesbian, Chicano and Spanish Civil War materials in the United States. Trotskyism is the fastest selling section in the store, but they have also sold thousands of Gay Pulp novels and Black Panther posters. Run by two "standup comedians and walking encyclopedias of The Left," Bolerium is a community hub, sponsoring queer zines, sending books to prisoners and helping young socialists find gainful employment.

"I have no plans to retire... I am just going to drop dead here."

- Mike Pincus, owner of Bolerium Books

"Bolerium" was directed by Keary Kensinger and produced, edited and shot by Nathan Kensinger. "Bolerium" had its festival premiere at the 2006 San Francisco Documentary Film Festival and won "Best Of Bernal" at the Bernal Outdoor Cinema Festival. It has screened in San Francisco at the Roxie Cinema, Artists Television Access (ATA), the Women's Center, the San Francisco Public Library and at Red Hill Books. In New York, it has screened at the Brooklyn Independent Cinema Series, the Millenium Film Workshop, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Film Series, East Coast Aliens, Cinema Classics and the Bluestockings Collective.

In 2007, "Bolerium" was released on DVD by IndiePix.
