The KR Rockers are the resident band of Kent Ridge Hall and comprises about thirty Kent Ridge Hall residents in its stable of musicians.
Since its inception, the band has been at the forefront of the National University of Singapore’s campus music scene.
Covering almost every style of music – from hard rock, to blues, to funk and soul – the versatility and dynamism of the KR Rockers has seen them constantly reinventing themselves through the years.
But the Rockers don’t just play good covers of popular songs – it has talented and award-winning songwriters in its midst too, equally adept at handling instruments or microphones, as they are at wielding their pens.
Past and present members of the Rockers include the JamX 2003 winners, the JamX 2006 winners and second runners-up, the Jam Aloud 2007 runners-up and active members of the Singapore music community.
The Rockers even has celebrities who were ex-Rockers: Ms Eunice Olsen, a Nominated Member of Parliament, once played the keyboards in the band!
At the end of the day, some people might consider the KR Rockers as more than just a band – to them, the Rockers can even be considered as family.
The Rockers function in a very different way from other hall bands, as their bands are formed on a ‘yearly’ basis – that is, comprising hall residents from the same batch.
The Rockers, however, doesn’t like segregating its members, and tries as far as possible to ensure that every member has a chance to play with other members of the hall band.
For example, a band for a particular gig might see a fourth-year drummer playing with a freshie guitarist, grooving with a second-year bassist, and keeping the beat with a third-year keyboardist.
This means that by the time the freshie guitarist is in her/his final year of residence in Kent Ridge Hall, s/he would have had a chance to play with almost all the members of the KR Rockers.
This also means that the increased interactions promote a greater sharing of skills and forging of friendships among as many Rockers as possible.
Bonds, once forged, are hard to break, and for the Rockers, some of these bonds last a lifetime, both on stage and off it.
For as the saying goes: only the good die young, but the KR Rockers will always rock on!
