Kent State Anti War Committee's Blurbs |
About me:
The Kent State Anti War Committee (KSAWC) was founded on September 18, 2001 - a week after 9/11, to protest going to war on Afghanistan. Though started by Kent students, KSAWC is now a growing organization of students and non-student community members dedicated to raising awareness about the injustice that is the U.S. war machine.
Kent State Anti-War Committee Six-Point Statement
1. Against all U.S. government intervention – domestic and
international – for purposes of exploitation and conquest.
2. Against any military occupation that runs contrary to the human
rights, democratic aspirations and abilities of the occupied
population to control its own material resources.
3. For the complete, immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from
occupied territories.
4. We recognize the rights of all occupied peoples to resist.
5. For the immediate transfer of control of the material and
productive resources of Iraq and Afghanistan to their peoples, as well
as reparations proportionate to the economic losses produced by the
war and occupation.
6. The Kent State Anti-War Committee, in response to 7 years of war
in which the majority’s voice has not been responded to, suggests
alternative solutions – primarily direct action and alternative bottom-
up grassroots organizing. We propose a direct democracy in which the
voices and aspirations of the people can truly be expressed and heard.
Defining some terms:
In war, as well as in business, exploitation occurs when one country
or corporation takes over another's workers or resources and uses them
to gain wealth disproportionate to what it pays the workers or pays
for the resources.
Material resources – such as oil and fresh water – are invaluable to
the lives of everyday people in countries in which they are found. We
advocate for local control of resources
Iraq and Afghanistan, along with many other regions globally, suffer
under occupation. The people of occupied territories did not invite an
outside force into their neighborhoods. Rather, occupation is imposed
upon them to serve the interests of the occupying country. Because
the occupying country becomes the state – either outright or by proxy
– it can dictate how the occupied country is run. We believe that all
regions of the world have the right to self-determination and that the
people of those regions have the power to make their own decisions.
Direct democracy is KSAWC's way of making decisions collectively.
After discussing an issue, all the while maintaining respect for
diversity of opinions, we vote on an issue. Everyone has a voter.
There are no elected representatives. After voting, we abide by the
decision of the group.
KSAWC has adopted the tactic of direct action as the only way to
achieve real change. Direct action is political activity outside of
mainstream politics. We do not write letters to our representatives in
hopes that they will end the war. We strive to hold actions that have
immediate impact in the fight to end war. Examples of direct action
include strikes, sit-ins, lock-downs, demonstrations, and guerrilla
theater.
