Books
I've been in love with books all my life. I love everything about them – how they feel, how they look, how they smell. They're the best things in the world. My favourite authors include: Lawrence Block, Martin Amis, Michael Connelly, Michael Marshall, John Updike, Dennis Lehane, James M Cain, Charles O Locke, JT Edson, Elmore Leonard, Dashiell Hammett, James Lee Burke, John Katzenbach, Zizou Corder, Joseph O'Connor, ee cummings, Richard Brautigan, Nelson De Mille, Ray Bradbury, Raymond Chandler, Philip K Dick, Thomas Eidsen, Stephen King, Jack Kerouac, Louis Sachar, Don Winslow, Robert Cormier, Jack London, Ken Kesey, Cormac McCarthy, BS Johnson, Norman Mailer, Melvyn Burgess, John D MacDonald, John Steinbeck, Jack Gantos, T Jefferson Parker, JD Salinger, Arthur Rimbaud, Meg Rosoff, Catherine Forde, Leif Enger.

About me: I write books for/about young people. My first novel – MARTYN PIG – was published in 2001, and my eighth - called KILLING GOD (extract now available on my blog) - is published 25 June 2009. Other books I've written include: LUCAS, KISSING THE RAIN, CANDY, THE ROAD OF THE DEAD, BLOODLINE, I SEE YOU BABY (co-written with Catherine Forde), BEING and BLACK RABBIT SUMMER. They're books about real things, real lives (with occasional touches of other stuff), and although I wouldn't describe them as crime fiction, they often have crime fiction/thrillery elements in them. I like to write about the darker side of things, and I'm not known for my happy endings.
I've been lucky enough to win a few prizes for my books, such as: the Canongate Prize for New Writing, the Branford Boase Award, Kingston Youth Book Award, North East Book Award, Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis Jury Prize, Buxtehude Bulle, Golden Bookworm, Stockport Schools Book Award.
Before becoming a full-time writer, I spent years and years writing, performing and recording music. I also painted for a while. I've had lots of jobs I'd like to forget – post office clerk, civil servant, hot dog seller at London Zoo, crematorium handyman¸ railway ticket office clerk, customer services person ... aaaahhhh!!!
I live in North Yorkshire with my lovely wife Susan and our dogs Shaky, Jess, Minnie and Midge, plus six sheep, eight chickens, and two rabbits.
Thx for the add,i just want to tell you that I love ur book Candy.Im younger cousin had bought it for me to read.I was just so drawn to the book.I haven't read a book in awhile and im glad that your book was the first one I read.I can't wait to read the rest of your books.
I am in-love with your books, most definitely. Candy is the best book ever written in my personal opinion, the starting line of the book with the lump on the boy is complete genius. Thank you for writing all these marvelous books and I hope to see more soon? Maybe someone will turn them into movies one day that would be rad :]
Have you been entered for the North East Book awards this year? Plus same question as Cora. What happened to the black rabbit? Who killed it and nailed it the gate? Still haven't managed to read Killing God yet, but been told by Cora that its really good.
Love your books, I can't stop reading Lucas but the ending to Black Rabbit Summer was sad :( you need to publish more of your books in the USA I'm dieing to read more. I can just tell the difference between you books and some one elses, yours are like a really long movie (I read slow lol) and the others are like books. Don't ever stop making books love ya
I visited you at the book fair at frankfurt, it was really great listening to you reading your book! I kinda fell in love with your books, started with Lucas (I think two years ago...)! It's nice that you keep writin hope to read many more books from you!
I visited your reading last friday at Frankfurt Book Fair and I just wanted to tell you that it was a great pleasure for me - your performance was awesome and I just can't wait to get my exemplar of Black Rabbit Summer!
I love your books. Once i start reading them i can't stop. Im currently reading Lucas and plan on reading all of the others ones after. My favorite is Candy. Thats the first one i read. You are an amazing author. Keep up the good work.
I ordered Black Rabbit Summer from the bookstore the other day. I can't wait to read it because I haven't read a book in a long time that kept me turning the pages. But I know this one will because everything you write is captivating. Oh, and I started making an outline for my story like you suggested, and it IS helpful. The only hard thing is figuring what I want to happen and when.

Kevin Brooks, holy cow. Well...I guess how are you? I'd bet my life that people are always telling you "Oh my gosh I love your books," but I really do love your books. I love how you write them, and what you write about and everything. :) And I'm jazzed that you've got a new book coming out! What's it about?
