Motor-City-born and raised, Kevin Russell has mastered a unique blend of rock and soul - it's a Motor City thing!
After moving to Hollywood in the 70's and formed the classic rock band 707. They scored rock radio classics and toured playing arenas. After calling 707 quits, Kevin joined forces with Bill Kreutzman and Brent Midland (of Grateful Dead fame) to form Kokomo. They played sold-out show after sold-out show all over the U.S.
Next, Kevin got together with ex-Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker, along with David Bowie guitarist, Earl Slick. The band scored an MTV, rotation favorite, "Men Without Shame". Kevin toured and recorded with the band, but left the group to join up with the band Taxxi.
During this time, Kevin and Clarence "The Big Man" Clemons became friends in the Bay Area. Shortly thereafter, the two musical philanthropists put together a record and touring band and hit the road. as The Red Bank Rockers. Playing sell out shows across the U.S. these shows would often feature special guests like; Joe Walsh, Bruce "The Boss", Ringo, Jackson Brown, Jon Bon Jovi, Ritchie Sambora, Levon Helm,…to name a few. Good times and even better music! When not playing to massively sold-out crowds, Kevin was also doing plenty of recording sessions and making records for other artists as a much "sought-after guitarist."
In the 90's, Kevin concentrated on recording music for TV & film while concentrating on playing rock/blues and producing for other artists such as guitar legend Rick Derringer.
Kevin is a contemporary artist known in hip musical circles and by fans worldwide. He is a provocative player and his daring spirit is always apparent.
Long-time friends, other artists, and fans all seem to share a common view - you can feel Kevin's heartbreaks, struggles and triumphs when he plays. It connects us all to the music!
Kevin says it best, “Music has been the true healer throughout my life and my way to share love".
Love. Life. Listen.

Another place I am surprised our paths did not cross was that I played in a band with Randy's older brother, Doug (Kelle)...
I guess, "the kid brother of the lead singer" did not save his numerous questions just for me - very generous of you to loan RR your gear - that is a pretty big honor from one guitar player to another...
I still think of Randy as this sweet, quiet, chain smoking, Pepsi drinking, skinny, kid full of "show how you did that" questions; always practicing or hanging out with us while we played in the Rhoads' garage in Burbank or at Musonia... I tend to remember Randy as a person – not just a talented a player. Such a loss for his family and friends...
Your statements, "Ok yea we can all debate the “tone quest” questions, however I still hold to the belief, if you have it in your hands then it doesn’t really f--king matter what you use, you will still sound like you!... I used to think and still do that the amp is only reproducing what is in my hands..." I believe is TOTALLY in the pocket and wish more of the younger players would not stop at imitating the greats, or unknown greats (not to under-value learning from the best as a starting point) but continue to discovering, "what is in my(their) hands"
Your, "hands" are an inspiration to players of my, and I hope to the current, generation of players.
Very beautiful instrumental work... going to purchase, "Soul Generation" after hearing some of your tracks off of the Playlist...
"Old School" without sounding old (that is my idea of the highest compliment I can offer without going into Jeff Beck territory.)
"Strickly Gear Talk!!!" is what I love reading about - other players gear; past and present. Thanks for adding that to your Blog. Will leave comments at a later date (I run on "Glacier Time.)
When you wrote: "Well, as L.A. luck would have it, I needed money for rent in the 70’s and so I sold that Custom unfortunately along with some other cool gear. Starving musician man..." encapsulated my experience as a 70s L.A. musician - only I never made it to the "1979" and beyond part of your story... But glad you did.
Still deeply lament selling my, "Number One" which was a Black Les Paul Custom for $200 (!!!) to pay the rent - Unfortunately, I bet there are many of us out there with similar stories...
I remember hearing about, "707" back in the day - too bad our paths never crossed (Fetish, Pin–Up, The Game, Hardtack, The Take, were the principal bands I played in.)
