Kevin's Interests

| General | Movies are my big love, but I do get out of the house and onto the surf from time to time. Be crazy not to, living on the beach. I got myself a boogie board – the guys joke with me that I got it because I’m too lazy to stand up, but it’s a kick being that close to the surf. And we get some real crunchers out here so it can get intense at times. But if you see some guys hot-dogging out on the Malibu surf, chances are none of them will be me - I’ll be the one crawling onto the shore, dragging my boogie by the ankle and spewing up seawater lol! | | Music | My bro Jake plays in a band, The Folds, they’re a pretty good indie outfit. I got a guitar myself - it’s a Duesenberg Star Player TV in Surf Green (of course), and Dad got it made for me bespoke then shipped over from the factory in Hanover, Germany, for my 18th. He knew I’d love it – it’s got the art deco styling of a 40s jazz guitar, with 50s electric guitar production values. But I’m not into the idea of playing in a band right now – it’s just for me to chill out with in my den. I’m not so much a live band guy, I’m more into film soundtrack music - I collect movie soundtrack albums on vinyl. My most valuable one is The Third Man. And I’m trying to get hold of everything by this French dude Michel Legrand who did the soundtrack to the original Thomas Crown Affair – the one with Windmills of Your Mind. Every single soundtrack Quentin Tarantino puts together is a knockout for old stuff – I’m still on a mission to find Down In Mexico Way on vinyl, from Death Proof. But I’ll listen to pretty much everything – I keep an eye on the current scene, but my big thing is I like to know what music people were getting into around here before I was born. It’s a kinda historical place, California, if you’re into films and music. | | Movies | I’m on this mission this summer to see all the big old black and white movies they made out here in the 30s and 40s. Favourites so far – Citizen Kane and The Big Sleep. I keep my eye out for Shanta Rao Dutt’s name on the credits but no sign yet. Filmmakers I admire: Quentin Tarantino, obviously – I’d go for Jackie Brown as my number one. Also dig Death Proof, even if it is so sick it makes you wanna heave. Richard Linklater, because everything he does is trying something new. A Scanner Darkly is amazing; and I’m a big Phillip K Dick fan so I was gonna be hard to please. I’m really into a lot of the Mexican directors right now – guy who did Y Tu Mama Tambien, Alfonso Cuaron. Man, it’s mad he did the Harry Potter movie. And Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu who did Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel. I love to hear about new stuff – or old stuff – I haven’t seen yet. Like somebody just told me about this mad Hungarian dude called Jan Svankmajer the other day and his stuff rocked my world. Anybody out there got any suggestions? | | Television | There’s a few shows I’ll watch if they’re on - Entourage, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Everybody Hates Raymond – and there are a coupla shows I’ve got really into in the past, like Buffy and Dark Angel - but to be honest I don’t watch much TV these days. I use the set in my den to watch DVDs and play games. I’m into GTA4 on the Playstation 3 and Tiger Woods on the wii right now. | | Books | The Kid Stays In The Picture – Robert Evans
Which Lie Did I Tell? - William Goldman
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep – Phillip K Dick | | Heroes | Richard Linklater, Orson Welles, Shanta Rao Dutt. And hey, where’s the space for heroines? I’m gonna go for Jessica Alba, because ever since she did Dark Angel she’s kinda been my dream woman. |

About me:
Chilling out at home for the summer before heading to college in the fall, taking in some rays, hanging out with the guys, beach parties… the usual stuff. Going to film school at UCLA in September so getting some practice in with the camcorder, keeping a record of this last summer together before the gang break up. Home is a big old 30s house that used to belong to a guy who was in the movies back in the old days; it’s still got the screening room he put in. Jake’s pool table takes up most of the space now, but I’m gonna kick that out and hold a screening in there at the end of the summer so the gang can see themselves on the big screen. That’s the plan anyway – if I finish the movie in time. I guess I’m lucky to be able to live where I do – Dad’s an entertainment lawyer and Mom’s an interior designer (she fits out a lot of the big hotels) so they’re both kind of big players behind the scenes in this town. Me I wanna stick my neck out and make stuff of my own some day instead of working for the Man, so I guess I’m not always gonna have it so good. But hey, you can’t have everything so you might as well go after the things you really want in life. In the meantime I’m gonna make the most of having a Malibu pad to call home while I can.

Who I'd like to meet:
Shanta Rao Dutt, the guy that used to live in our house back in the 30s. He must have been some dude. This place rocks. Mum and Dad restored it back to its original glory and it looks pretty cool. There’s loads of old kit of his up in the attic. I’m trying to get the cine camera to work but I’m guessing he ditched it because it was trashed, because I’m getting nowhere with it. There’s a few old scripts and stuff up there, and the guy used to work with some big names. I found a note asking the dude to read a first draft of a script, and it was signed OW. I guess it could be Orson Welles. I couldn’t find the script anywhere, but hey, maybe it was Citizen Kane. It’s a big mystery what the guy did - he’s not listed anywhere as a director or a producer – he must have been one of those behind-the-scenes guys that made things happen and didn’t shout about it. I’m gonna keep digging through those old papers in the attic till I find out what movies he had a hand in. Must have been some big ones to pay for a house like this. The guy had it built from the ground up – that takes some capital. Doesn’t sound like mafia with a name like his, but hey, you never know.
