About me:
1.What's your name?
Kevin Westenberg
www.myspace.com/kevinwestenberg
www.kevinwestenberg.com
2. Could you please tell us your background until now?
Born. Diapers. Food. Student. Beer. College. Architecture school. Denmark. Settle in London. Professional photographer. Taoism. Life. Love. Happiness.
3. What made you get into photography?
Been a music fanatic my whole life and wanted to get closer to the music. Also, goal number one…to not sit at a desk.
4. What is photography to you?
everything. Another appendage. I see life continually through a lens now. Light. Shade. Shadow.
5. What do you aim to express through your work?
The Goal Is Soul.
6. What are the best part of your job and the most difficult part?
best part: freedom to create
most difficult: deadlines and organizing. Paperwork. Egos.
7. What do you think of the music industry?
there’s never been a more exciting time for creative music and access to music and yet the music “industry” is dying through it’s very greed and lack of organization. The record labels have become the purveyors of DOOM and GLOOM so they can scam all their contributors and collaborators into working on the cheap in order to boost corporate profits like the "good ol'days" when they had everyone believing CD's were more expensive to manufacture than vinyl. They made out like bandits for YEARS.
8. What are you paying particular attention to now?
The digital revolution. Some parts are great and convenient but for the most part, it makes our lives far more complicated than before. Human relationships are more strained than ever due partly to our reliance on computers and the fact that we’re morphing and evolving into half man, half machines. One never has to leave the house now. Not a good thing.
9. What are you doing when you are not at work?
Reading. Meditation. Socializing. Movies. Theatre.
10. What makes you worry?
Currently it’s the realization that the planet is going to kick us all off soon. Bye bye humans! Adios!
11. It seems you’ve been doing various things, how do you explain to
people what you do?
At the moment I believe the main perception of Kevin Westenberg for the average person who follows photography would be mostly associated with musicians. Changing that perception is quite important but not critical. The main ideal i would hope my work is able to perceive is one of overall quality and a sense of the images being classic and timeless. This of course is determined by many factors many of which are outside of my control, however when I'm editing there is the feeling of making the chosen subject no matter who they might be into a iconic image rather than just portraying them in real life. The lighting, tone and composition are also important elements in this perception. Does it draw the viewer in? and then does the subject holds people's attention and create a sense of wonder about them? These are also important elements in my thinking. However there are too many factors and changes that can occur in the course of a photo shoot to make too many plans. There is a large element of chance and luck for the whole of each and every shoot to work properly. To answer your question then more directly, the answer would be to create classic, direct and ever-lasting images.
12. What are you working on now?
Fleet Foxes. Bat For Lashes. Paolo Nutini. Editors. Arctic Monkeys. Depeche Mode. Pete Doherty. Nick Cave. BB King. Elbow. Radiohead. 4th year of Harajuku personal project. Oasis. Led Zeppelin. Other personal projects.
13. What are your future plans?
Survival. Food. Water. Sex…..and two book projects, one on my 20+ years of music, actors, directors, friends etc and a second book project which is the Harajuku Project I’ve been working on in Tokyo the last 4 years.
