KGB’s name has nothing to do with the infamous Russian Secret Service. It’s simply a short form for Kevin’s Garage Band! Bass player Kevin Cullen soundproofed his garage several years back and it’s been the band’s practice space ever since. Drummer Steve Cullen has spent the best part of the last 17 years playing with guitarist Martin Butcher. Together, they were part of the line-up for Krimson Steel, a local band that played throughout the Brantford area in the late 80's through to the mid 90's. Steve and Martin have continued their partnership with KGB, which originally featured Kevin Cullen on rhythm guitar and Derek Scanlan on bass with gigs at Goodfellas II in Brantford and Knuckleheads (Paris, Ontario) .
Eventually, bass player Derek Scanlan took over the lead vocal position with Kevin Cullen making the switch to bass guitar. This line-up existed for several years and was highlighted by gigs with Teenage Head and the Led Zeppelin tribute band Houses Of The Holy. KGB has since beefed up their line-up with the addition of a second lead guitarist Carl Males. He brings an added level of talent, intensity and extensive live experience that has allowed KGB to expand their repertoire with a solid twin lead guitar attack.
Playing a brand of heavy metal/hard rock, KGB knocks out the classics by such bands as Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Kiss, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Van Halen, Guns ‘N Roses and AC/DC as well as keeping current with material from bands like Wolfmother, Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots, Collective Soul, Black Label Society and Alice In Chains. It’s a great mix that people always seem to enjoy judging by a recent and very successful weekend gig at The Royal Tavern in Paris. Selectively choosing when and where to play live because of the band’s families, jobs and other commitments, they are continually lauded as “Brantford’s Best Kept Secret”. Well the secret is out and KGB is looking for new places to play for their very loyal and devoted fans. If you love classic metal and hard rock with a little of the best of modern hard rock, check them out at their next live show. There aren’t many bands out there with the kind of passion for this type of material anymore.
