This Khann’s wrath throws Neurosis heft and Isis throb into a blender with crunchy Napalm Death, walking the middle course between knuckle dragging sludge and meth-ed out metal. - Grind and Punishment................ These 19 tracks of vegan activist pontifications feature insanely fast drum blast beats amidst a storming barrage of relentless hardcore and blistering experimental metal that occasionally bows to elements of doom and dissonance. (7) - Eclectic Vibes................ Listening to Khann’s Tofutopia immediately brings bands such as Converge, The Locust, and even Neurosis to mind. Mixing in a distinctive punk influence with spastic hardcore and some progressive elements, this group’s debut is certainly ambitious. And while it may be a little too spastic at points, Khann has established an extremely solid base that they are sure to build into something better and better as time goes along. - Cosmos Gaming................ “Tofutopia” is a wildly original work with tons of different influences that mesh well and compliment each other rather than mismatching and sounding jarring which is what usually happens when heavy genres collide. - Baked Ziti................The first half of this release moves quickly, each tune barely a blip on the radar but sprawling from your speakers with an endless array of tortured screams, manic drums, and angular guitar patterns - Sea of Tranquility................ But is the album longer tracks (longer being a still short 3 minutes al the way to a droning 9 minutes) that really got my attention. It starts with the fourth track, “Anodynic Spheres” where about 1:09 into the introspective show gazing post rock, Khann kick into a stunning, almost melodic black metal blast beat (the injection of sublime melody briefly appears in “Quarantined” and “Squall” also), before settling down into more dreamy instrumentation. It’s a real WOW moment that indicates this band is far more than just sheer noise. The second moment of chaos breaking depth is the post rock introspection of “Bird” which is as good as anything put out by the likes of The Ocean, Rosetta or Transmission0 this year and at 5 minutes, is a quicker listen. Then “Volcanic Lungs pt 1” is 6 minutes of crumbling, sludgy atonal heft while “Lament” lone moment of reprieve. - Digital Metal................ Metalgaze and grind together doesn’t sound like a good combination, but it actually works out extremely well, sounding similar to a more off-the-hooks Buried Inside. In a sea of extreme bands looking to play it safe this year, it’s nice to see someone color outside the lines. - Way Too Loud!(.com)................ If you're not satisfied with your heavy metal until it leaves you with a bona fide splitting headache, then Orlando's Khann are a must-hear. - MTV.com................
