They say time heals all wounds. Northeast Texas record label Kick Doe Entertainment certainly has had its fair share of setbacks in the tumultuous music industry in its four years of existence. Coming from a part of Texas where there isn't a large hip-hop scene and where local hip-hop acts typically remain just that – local – Kick Doe Entertainment began to make noise in 2005 and 2006 with the release of several underground mix tapes that blended the traditional Texas' sound with a commercial sensibility that was unheard of from cats in their area.
"Not being from a prominent part of the South like New Orleans, Houston, or Atlanta, you tend to get overlooked regardless of talent or skill," says recording artist Disgruntled Negro, one of the label's marquee acts. "We make music that retains that underground feel but can still crossover onto radio with the proper push. All we lack so far is the proper push."
Even with the explosion of Houston's rap scene over the past 18 months, it's been a struggle getting major labels to take notice of the young record label. That seems poised to change with the upcoming release of the label's debut LP, aptly titled "Tired of Being Slept On" featuring production from XV, Wyshmaster, Seven, and the famed Rockwilder. ?
"What you're going to hear on this album isn't our best imitation of a UGK or a T.I. album, it's our sound, which is probably unlike anything you've heard before," says label CEO and founder, Mr. Scrill.
Indeed, it's that unique sound that has garnered the attention of several labels such as Sony Urban, Grand Hustle, and Block Entertainment. Songs like the XV produced "Throw'd" and "Grippin' Grain" (featuring Showstoppa) shows that KDE can put together street anthems with crossover appeal, while obvious radio jams such as the smoothed-out "Ridin' Through The Ghetto" display the true range of the label's roster of talent. Tracks like “Superstar”, which features Lil Ronnie(DSR) and a classic Pimp C(UGK) sample, allow Kick Doe Entertainment to put an exclamation point on their critically acclaimed project.
Despite what some may consider a revolving door of talent over the years, the roster of Kick Doe Entertainment includes Mr. Scrill, B.U.G., 2 Piece, Yung Blu, Celly Telly, and Chop Suey & Loc. With such a diverse roster of talent, nearly every type of lyricism is represented, making Kick Doe Entertainment every bit as versatile as they are brilliant.
