THE SINGLE BEST SONG I’VE HEARD FROM A SCOTTISH GROUP IN A VERY LONG TIME
HEAVEN OR LAS VEGAS review Aug 2007
Our latest review of a new Scottish band comes from Glasgow, with Kick to Kill’s new single ‘Quit Tomorrow’.
Quit Tomorrow is the single best song I’ve heard from a Scottish group in a very long time. It starts with a slow thoughtful build up then hits the right tempo at just the right time for just the correct length of time. With strong hints towards Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Jesus and Mary Chain, Kick to Kill almost sound like a Scottish version of ‘I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness’. Ok so Kick to Kill aren’t doing anything groundbreaking here, but what they are doing is bloody good. And if these guys can string together eleven tracks as strong as Quit Tomorrow, I’ll be the first one in line to part with hard earned cash for the listening pleasure. The band encapsulates the best elements of gothic, drone and alternative rock.
As for the other two tracks, ‘Acid Rain’, has an opening bass so reminiscent of The Cure in their early days you almost half expect to hear Robert Smith pop up somewhere. It’s certainly a more than decent follow up to ‘Quit Tomorrow’. On my first listen the vocals did seem too overwhelmed by the instruments but on further plays this just seems to blend the elements of the band together more effectively, whether this is by accident or design doesn’t matter, it works. ‘Senses Stripped’ for me is the only track, which doesn’t work. Here Kick to Kill seem to sacrifice the initially ear catching jagged guitars and punchy drums for (and to be fair) unnecessarily repetitive backing vocals which renders what could have been a good song relatively uneventful.
Still, on the evidence of ‘Quit Tomorrow’, Kick To Kill seem to have something many of their peers lack - a good grasp of what they want to sound like, and a good grasp of how to make music we’ll like the sound of. Its gone straight onto my MP3 player and anyone with the savvy to check them out will do the same.
The CD is available to buy at Avalanche Records or better yet directly from their website.

RockIt Writing single review
Described by some as “the most exciting alternative band since the Jesus And Mary Chain emerged”, KickToKill deal in post punk/darkwave music.
This alternative Glasgow band whose influences include Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine have three songs for you to listen to on their myspace. These are Quit Tomorrow, Acid Rain and Senses Stripped.
The songs are dark and atmospheric and are a good choice if you like your music moody and melancholic.

Damned legend the very lovely Captain Sensible reviews KickToKill supporting The Damned at the Newcastle date on their Twisted Cabaret tour (Dec 2007)... (looks like he's reading a very interesting book backstage...)
But back to the tour, and our support act this evening were 'Kick To Kill' from Scotland. You know, I hope they don't mind me saying this but they sounded a bit like a gothed up version of Joy Division.... not that that's such a bad thing. Anyway, they were surprisingly competent and we hope they go far. And this being another excellent support act means the audition for the support slot via email idea of ours has worked wonderfully so far, with no duff acts or punk tribute bands whatsoever. Phew, thank gawd for that!
And the student's didn't know what they were missing as the audience tonight and the show was about the best yet.
