KID MOE AIM BUDDY ICONS:
From the days of hand-drawing logos
onto hundreds of CD-Rs, assembling press kits in DVD cases from Blockbuster Video, cramming
into borrowed mini vans, and playing songs about characters from Gilligans Island, East San
Francisco Bay Area-based pop-punk/powerpop band Kid Moe, fuelled by the do-it-yourself
spirit of independent artists, have self-booked, self-promoted, self-produced, self-managed,
and self-designed their way into the local, regional, and even national scene.
            With two full-length albums, one
small tour, and hundreds of local shows under their belt since the bands conception in late
2001, Kid Moe began to feel the momentum of their independent efforts in 2005 when founding
band members Vincent Lay (vocals/guitar) and Anna Kremenliev (drums) were joined by Casey
Saran (guitar/vocals) and Shane DeLea (bass). In August 2005 Kid Moe released their third
and latest album, Hella OK, featuring all production and artwork by Kid Moe, with
funding made possible through independent merchandise sales and a cash prize received from
winning a battle of the bands in Santa Ana. From sales of Hella OK, For
Governor (2004) and other merchandise, Kid Moe was able to fund an independently booked
and managed tour across 10 states in January 2006, culminating at the renowned Key Club in
Hollywood.
From the energy of a successful
tour, Kid Moe returned home with a new look, a tighter sound, and most importantly an
increased motivation to independently promote the band. Local shows and album sales improved
for Kid Moe in early 2006. In February the band released a self-directed and self-produced
music video (based on tour footage) for Goodbye California (Hella OK). One month
later Kid Moe was chosen (above 19 other local bands) by judges Tony Hicks (pop music
writer, Contra Costa Times) and James Sekill (owner, Teki Pyro Records) as winners of
another battle of the bands, this time receiving a prize of studio time at Red House in
Walnut Creek with engineer Mikael Johnston (Jane's Addiction, Static X, The Matches,
Smashmouth).
Kid Moe looks forward to recording a
new E.P. with Mikael Johnston in the spring and their first national tour (also
independently booked) in the summer.
These guys ... and girl ... do it right. [T]hey understand that dynamics count. Get to a
chorus, make sure it's catchy, and make sure you do whatever it takes to know that there's
usually more than one or two parts to a good song.
- Tony Hicks: music critic, Contra Costa Times
[Kid Moe is] easily the greatest pop-punk band from Concord, Calif. OK, admittedly
there's not a whole lot of competition for the championship belt, but if there was, Kid Moe
would be a hard knockout. The band's one-two punch of unapologetically catchy choruses and
downright innocent sincerity is Kid Moe's ace in the hole.
- Gabe Meline, North Bay Bohemian
Their latest release, Hella Okay, takes several digs at California culture while giving us
bittersweet pop songs for the hopelessly unhip.
- Simon McCormack , Alibi (Albuquerque, NM)
