WHATIS BSL?
What is Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)?
Basically, BSL is a law that is based on looking at the breed of a certain dog rather than the behavior of one specific animal. It affects the rights of individuals to own a certain type of dog. Breed bans mean that entire breeds of dogs are targeted, rather than targeting the responsibilities of the owner of an individual dog. BSL is much like racial profiling, in that it fails to take into consideration the actions of the individual, preferring to generalize it to the entire race/breed.
BSL is seen by many to be a knee-jerk reaction of politicians to dog bite occurrences. No education or knowledge of the breed is behind these decisions. People overreact to dog bites, specifically when 'Pit Bulls' are involved, and tend to howl for the euthanasia of the animal rather than directing their attention to the details surrounding the incident. In most cases, the dog has been kept in the yard on a chain and under socialized; the dog has been left alone with a child unsupervised (which should not be done with any dog, not just Pits); the dog has not been spayed/neutered... The list goes on and what it basically comes down to is irresponsible ownership of the dog.
The main reason that so many of us are fighting against BSL is because it is not effective, and it targets the dogs rather than the people who own them. BSL basically says that it will remove certain breeds from the hands of responsible owners at the same time as removing them from neglectful hands. It makes honest and dependable Pit owners out to criminals for owning the dogs that they love so much.

Pit Bulls are probably one of the most misunderstood breeds and they have the lowest adoption rate to prove it. The first step in changing this trend is to equip the public with the information and resources necessary to make knowledgeable and educated decisions regarding adoption/ownership of these types of dogs...
As with any other type of dog, proper training of your pit bull can determine whether dog ownership is viewed as a success or a failure. Any breed of dog that is not properly trained or socialized can potentially become aggressive to its owner or family. With so many resources available, why not make the decision to gather as much information and training as possible? Remember, just as we have our own distinct personalities, our dogs have theirs....
Pit bulls have a long history. Unfortunately, people only use the portion of their history that supports their personal interest. For instance, if you want to portray pit bulls as vicious fighters, you can highlight this portion of their history and ignore the rest. If you want to portray them as heroes, you can point out Stubby, who was an honored soldier in WWI. If you want people to see them as family pets who are great with children, you can use Pete from The Little Rascals as an example. However, when considering the fate of this breed, you must consider his entire history. The constant theme throughout the pit bulls history is that, as with most terriers, they are easy to train and want to please their owners. It is up to their owners to determine what their dog will become. Will she be a fighting dog, a hero, or a loving family dog? As their history has shown, they have the potential to do exceptional things. Training determines whether those exceptional things are positive or negative....
In closing: "You cannot judge an entire breed of dog on a few individuals."

Hi, my name is Hailey Beth. This is my mommies page but she said I could say a little something about myself and my family. I am almost 3 and am a yellow lab. My birthday is 7/17/09. My daddy and mommie are the greatest. As you can see I get lots and lots of treats but I still think I am a lapdog..LOL...I have an uncle named Jason..He is my mommie's son and he is 21..His birthday is 11/7/09 and he'll be 22..My mommie says she loves him so much and has so much time to make up for..Not sure what she means but I know the words LOVE..I also have a brand new new
step-sister is named Brooke. She comes over alot and plays with me..I luv her so much..She rubs my ears and baby talks to me..I also have another new step-sister Sissy Amber, Uncle Evan (her husband) ,step-brother Dylan and baby Brayden.I love all of my family especially when they rub my head and lets me give them my big lab kisses. I spent 6/10 - 6/23 with them and It's been right at 24 hours since I left Shana and the rest of Gages family after 2 wonderful weeks and I am almost in depression mode. I had an awesome time and love them so much..They are my 2nd family and home even though they are over 1200 miles away..I feel in love with everyone there in Lousiana (not everyone literally LOL) but all of Gages family and friends..I felt right at home when I arrived and cried the day I said goodbye to Britt when he left for work knowing that was the last time I would see him for months..I tried my hardest at the airport to NOT cry (Cuz Shana said, YOU'LL MESS UP ALL THAT NEW MAKEUP AND YOU GOTTA LOOK GOOD FOR TONY") sooo I was a big girl in front of her but once I started walking to the plane, tears were coming..
This family opened their home, hearts and lives to me. Britt even was off work (Airforce) for the time I was there..That made me feel soo special and loved...
And the 7 dogs...WHEWWWW..Now that was a little getting used to..Talking ZOO HERE PEOPLE..We had 3 pitbulls, Kaine, Bear and Gotti, 3 Yorkies: Sadie, Shaley and Reese and one little chichaua "Bella"..I have spent the last year watching Kaine grown through the pictures and made so many videos surrounding his life, yet he when I got there he was so "I AM INDEPENDANT" Kaine and if he wanted attention he let YOU know...
Now BEAR..I absolutely fell in love with this ADHD baby..He was like the energizer bunny but I had a special way of calming him down..He was my bed buddy everynight. He would get up under the covers and had to be righth next to me...I wanted to bring him home so bad but Shana wouldn't let ME..BAD BAD SHANA!!! I had taken a blanket (MY LABS) with me on the flight and Bear absolutely fell in luv with he..He slept with it everywhere (as my pics shows) so I left it for him..Hailey is pissed but I'll get her another one..LOL ... I told them they better "will" bear to me and she said "DON'T WORRY SHERRY, IF WE EVER HAVE TO REHOME HIM YOU'LL BE THE 1ST CUZ WE KNOW HE'LL BE IN A GREAT LOVING HOME"..I was like...awwwwwww thanks...:) And Gotti girl..I didn't get much time with her because she left with her 18 year old mommie Heather (their daughter) 4 days after I got there but the few days I spent with her were special..She was a little luv bug..Luved to be in your lap all the time..I couldnt get enough of these babies and I miss all of them too..

Had a few injuries while I was there: Lets see: 1: Bear Chipped my front tooth but no worries, it is FIXED 2: I fell on the airbase while videoing the dogs at the park in the water- thats on my videos section if you want to see..just a small twist to the ankle but its a video good for a laugh NOW 3: Hit my head on their fireplace shelf 4: Hit my toes on their coffee table (YES I AM ACCIDENT PRONE AND NOW SHANA KNOWS ITS ALL TRUE)..I'm always hurting myself at home..
The 14 days I had with this family will always in my heart. They are the greatest family I have ever had a chance to be a part of and I miss them so much already. I got up the first morning waiting to see BEAR, no bear...No Shana...No Kaine :(
I'll be back in a few months for another visit (when its cooler LOL) and i can't wait...
Another memory I will forever hold is sitting at the end of Gages grave..I poured tears and told him what a special boy he was and how thousands upon thousands people and familes know him and how he is now a "household name" around America..It was a very emotional time for me..I just sat and cried and cried...Gage lived a great 7 years and the one thing that helps me is to know he is in Gods hands and with my furbaby Rayne.

I hate talking about myself but here goes: I am newly married to a wonderful man who i think was sent from Heaven to finally show me what love is all about..We got married on the beach at Nagshead in N.C. on July 8, 2008. He is the most patient man I have ever met and he shares my wonderful love for animals. I tragically suffered the loss of my beautiful pitbull "Rayne Wynter" in 2006 through an act of domestic violence caused by my x-husband...It is very hard to talk about but I plea to all to please keep you and your pets safe. I never thought that the very person who was supposed to love and take care of Rayne would be the one to end his life..My life was shattered and it took me very long to come to terms that everything happens for a reason for this is what brought me together with Gage's family who also suffered a tragic, horrific death of their beautiful family companion Gage. 2oo6 Brought the most beautiful labrador into my life..She is a rescue and she is my heart and soul...I wake up to these awesome goldish brown eyes staring me the face and then a big thump thump which is her tail wagging against the wall all happy her mommie is "AWAKE"..Yes, she's my little alarm clock..
She has been my rock since loosing Rayne..She's helped my heart mend and everyday is easier because she is in my life...I owe her everything and I try to show her every day, every hour of her precious life just how loved, special and incredibly how important she is to my life..

2008 has also brought me together with a wonderful family. Through a horrific act of animal cruelty which ended in this family loosing a precious family member (Gage), I have found the best friend I could ever have wished for in life. This is Shana Burke (Gage's mommie). I love her so much and she has become such a big part of my life. The entire Burke family has (yes Britt, I love you too!) Gage's death is the story behind "The Gage Foundation- Taking a Stand Against Animal Cruelty". Gage, you are the beginning, the reason and our strength to start and continue our mission of having all State laws reviewed, amended and enforced against all Animal Abusers...Through your death we have learned that there is so much that needs to be done to protect our pets..I'm so sorry that your heartless, coward neighbor did what he did to you..I hold on to the thought that you are no longer in fear and all the pain is now gone and your precious body is all healed up and I "KNOW" that you are one of the most beautiful pitbulls up there in heaven. Don't worry Gage, I will forever love and watch after your mom until the day she crosses the bridge and you are reunited again. i am very proud and honored to be the secretary of "The Gage Foundation" and am and will continue to fight for the rights of the true "victims".~ I also share my heart, life and home with the most beautiful yellow labrador named "Hailey Beth". She came into my life at the age of 13 weeks in September 2006. ~I have always held a strong belief that everyone in this world has a purpose, a reason for being,something they are supposed to do with their life. It took me over 30 years to find mine and I am so thankful to be one of the fortunate ones who has the opportunity to find their purpose. Pitbulls have captured my heart. As any person who works in the animal world knows, pitbulls are the most hated dogs in the world. As a breed, they’re no more aggressive than any others. They beat out most other breeds in temperament tests performed by the American Temperament Test Society, including the Golden Retriever and Poodle. Bad owners create dogs that are unpredictable. These dogs are not properly socialized to people, children and other animals. They are not properly trained, and they’re owned by irresponsible, ignorant people that refuse to take responsibility for their dog’s training. Because of them, Pitbulls have gone from being the all-American breed, prized for their loyalty and intelligence, to the most feared, misunderstood and euthanized breed in America. Outside of dog fighting and guarding property, the pitbull breed have been found beaten, starved, burned, mutilated, and mistreated to make them aggressive. After the owner no longer has any use for the dog, the dog is either left for dead, turned loose to die, or finds it way into animal control services, where it will 9 times out of 10 be euthanized.
In all honesty, all breeds have the potential to bite, but the most feared and hated (Pitbull and pitbull type dogs) get plastered all over the news. Also, Pitbulls are so often wrongly accused because people incorrectly identify the breed of the dog. People usually wrongly identify a dog as being a Pitbull or Pit mix because it has a big head or a lot of muscle. This makes things even worse for this breed.
Between the media’s search for ratings and popular myths, Pit bulls and other “vicious” breeds don’t stand a chance. The only ones fighting for them are the Rescues who work primarily with this breed (Best Friends Animal Sanctuary being an excellent example) and the loving owners that take care of them, nurture them and know exactly how wonderful they really are. It may seem trivial to a lot of people, but to the thousands of Pitbull owners in the U.S., it is an everyday struggle to keep their families from being torn apart by something as ridiculous as a bad reputation.
Pitbulls have been the target of Breed Specific Legislation world wide. BSL is a law that targets a specific breed, cross of a breed or any dog that “has the appearance of that specifically targeted breed”. In easy terms: It is a law that takes away “our right” to own a specific breed of dog. Why? A large part of it is the wrong people getting a breed of dog for the wrong reasons, or, an irresponsible person getting a dog period. The dog reflects the human and becomes what the human makes it. When the dog ends up a problem in the neighborhood, it is the one blamed, not the human. Until the right people realize that this is the problem, it is a sad reality that this breed will always be under the spotlight.
There is a great belief by a lot of people that fighting pitbulls cannot be reahabilitated. My response to that is: Remember those victims of Bad Newz Kennels (Michael Vick x-fighting dogs). Living close to where this story broke I remember Peta (who advocates the killing of all pit bulls) calling these dogs “ticking time bombs” and HSUS urging people to “mourn” them as if they were already dead. I along with many other people and Organizations such as Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and Bad Rap protested, demanding that the U.S. Justice System not compound the appauling abuse these dogs had already suffered by killing them. Thankfully, the rescue operations won their fight to give these victims a second chance at life. They were given a chance to be evaluated (thank you Judge Hudson). This was a great surprise to everyone everywhere and we knew that these dogs were only going to have one chance to prove that PETA and all the others who wanted them euthanized, were wrong! I remember praying and praying to God to please give these victims the opportunity to live and know what it is to be loved.
These pitbulls now had literally "THE CHALLENGE OF THEIR LIVES." They had to prove that they could be helped, that they weren't the menacing and dangerous dogs that people were making them out to be. After suffering starvation, being fed gunpowder to make them more aggressive, forced breeding, fighting for their life in a pit while people were yelling and screaming around them placing bets on which dog would survive and seeing others being electrocuted, slammed to the ground and killed for not being "champion fighters", I have to admit I was a little worried (ok alot worried) but I was every single night praying so hard for these dogs because they had lived through the worst possible hell for any dog and I so wanted them to know how it felt to be loved, to have food in their bellies, toys to play with and learn that a human hand does not always mean pain or death.
God answered my prayers!!! They faced the CHALLENGE and they WON! We did however loose one due to health problems and one had to be euthanize due to extreme aggression. I was so proud of each and every one of these dogs. They had no idea what they had done. This was not only a Victory for them, it was a Victory for every single pitbull who has been abused, fought and euthanized. This was a loud message to PETA and HSUS that "Pitbulls are deserving, despite their bad history." After given the go ahead by Judge Henry Hudson, the Rescue Organizations stepped up and helped with the placement of these precious victims.
Twenty two of the so called worst cases (most aggressive) are now residing at the Best Friend Animal Sanctuary and are now thriving, rehabilitated, loving and learning to trust again pitbulls. Ten of them with to BAD RAP, and the remaining were placed in rehabilitation shelters across the country and many are currently living in loving foster homes.
These 47 pitbulls made history. They were given a second chance and they proved to America that they ARE worthy (as a breed) and that they do deserve the same chance as any other abused animal. Now if America would just wake the hell up and see how wrong they are. BLAME THE DEED-NOT THE BREED people!

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW ME, MY NAME BEFORE I WAS RESCUED WAS “JANE”. I WAS ONE OF THE DOGS NAMED IN BAD MAN VICK’S INDICTMENT. I WAS SAID TO BE ONE OF HIS MOST FOUGHT DOGS AND MADE HIM A LOT OF MONEY. SOMEONE SAID I WAS A “GRAND CHAMPION”. I KNOW THAT’S SUPPOSED TO BE SOMETHING GOOD BUT NOT TO ME, IT'S ONLY A GOOD "TITLE" TO THOSE MEAN PEOPLE WHO MADE ME FIGHT AND KILL MY OTHER DOGGIE FRIENDS. I KNEW IF I DIDN’T DO IT THEY (VICK) WOULD HURT ME REALLY BAD. I REMEMBER FEELING REALLY SAD WHEN THE DOG I WAS FORCED TO FIGHT WAS LAYING ON THE DIRTY GROUND BARELY BREATHING. I JUST WANTED TO GO OVER AND GIVE HIM “I’M SORRY KISSES” BUT THEY JUST DRAGGED HIM AWAY AND I NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO SAY I WAS SORRY. THEY (BAD NEWZ KENNELS) ALSO PULLED ALL MY TEETH OUT. I DON’T KNOW WHY BUT IT HURT SOOOO BAD AND NOW I HAVE TO EAT SOFT FOODS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. IT’S HARD FOR ME TO PICK UP A BALL AND OTHER TOYS WITHOUT MY TEETH AND MY JAW WAS BROKEN IN A FIGHT AND MY TOUNGE SORTA HANGS OUT THE SIDE OF MY MOUTH. I HAVE SCARS ALL OVER MY FACE AND MY EARS WERE CUT TO MAKE ME LOOK MEAN (THAT HURT REALLY BAD TOO). ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS RUN AWAY AND TAKE ALL MY DOGGIE FRIENDS WITH ME BUT WE WERE ALL LOCKED UP OR TIED WITH HEAVY LOGGING CHAINS TO CAR PARTS AND TREES. I WAS SO TIRED, HUNGRY AND AFRAID ALL THE TIME. I REMEMBER SOME NIGHTS WISHING I WERE DEAD. THEN A MIRACLE HAPPENED. PEOPLE FOUND US! AT FIRST I WAS TERRIFIED. I SAW TRUCKS AND LOTS OF PEOPLE WALKING ALL AROUND LOOKING AT ALL OF US. THEN ONE BY ONE WE WERE PUT INTO DIFFERENT TRUCKS AND TAKEN TO A PLACE CALLED A "SHELTER" WHERE WE GOT FRESH WATER, FOOD AND LOTS OF OTHER DOGS WERE THERE TOO. IT WASN’T LONG UNTIL SOMEONE CAME AND TOOK ME (AND A LOT OF MY OTHER FRIENDS FROM THE SHELTER'S) TO A PLACE CALLED “BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SANCTUARY” WHERE I WAS GIVEN MY OWN NICE "SAFE" PLACE WITH YUMMY FOOD AND CLEAN WATER AND EVEN A SOFT THING TO SLEEP ON. I THOUGHT I HAD DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN. SLOWLY I BEGAN TO LEARN THAT NOT ALL PEOPLE ARE MEAN AND NOT EVERY HAND IS GOING TO HIT ME. I HAVE LEARNED TO TRUST AND I HAVE LEARNED TO LOVE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE. After over 365 days I finally got to meet the family that has touched my heart and life forever. 1100 miles away on 6/9/09 I got on that jetplane (first time flying) and spending 2 wonderful weeks with my 2nd adopted family. I love them all and Rest in Peace Precious Gage. Your with my baby Rayne and I know your having a blast.

My baby spent 5 years with me and his life was cut short due to the man who was supposed to love and care for him..His daddy..He took his life and I will forever be changed because of this but I know in my heart that he and Gage are in heaven looking down and they are having the time of their lives up there with God..I love you Rayne.

Oh, what a huge surprise…First it was PETA then that deal fell through and now is HSUS trying to help Vick show his remorse..
Being just a very small part of this investigation (the dogs) and having the opportunity to see these dogs the day they were rescued is something that has forever changed my life. I remember how furious I was that anyone could commit such unconscionable acts against animals. Seeing the few bones of the 8 dogs who died caused my mind to literally visualize what these dogs must have gone through. We later learned that these 8 dogs died by either drowning, gun shot, slamming to the ground, electrocution or however their death was decided by Vick and his Bad Newz Kennels co-conspirators.

DO I THINK PEOPLE DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE?
Yes, I agree that people do deserve a second chance but as far as I am concerned, the first time Vick saw his (or his and someone’s stolen pet) fight and saw the horror, graphic, sadistic and just plain heartbreaking pain these dogs go through, THAT WAS HIS SECOND CHANCE…THAT WAS HIS CHANCE TO SAY “NO MORE”…I can’t affiliate or condone this kind of pain these dogs are going through and not only that what about the dog he “slammed to the ground”…OK..Now that is the person who is without remorse, feelings, a concience and sorry to say no chance of ever gaining any of those traits.
I will never believe anything that comes out of his mouth (expect that yes he is sorry he lost he millions, fans, 9 million dollar contract and tainted his reputation) but he is not and will never be truly sorry for what led him to the loss of all this and in my heart I believe had he not been caught Moonlight Drive would still house Bad Newz Kennels and many many deaths of animals all the while Vick and all those involved in his “operation” are lining their pockets with money at the cost of precious, innocent and FORGIVING animals….
As Vdick is sitting in his Hampton Virginia 4.1 million dollar home for what’s left of his 23 month, I sit here thinking you know, “There are a lot of the survivors of his Operation, who suffered longer (some way longer) than 23 months of abuse and I get this burning in my chest and I try to realize that there is nothing that I, you or anyone can do. He served his time (although he could have gotten up to 40 years (5 years for each dog killed) if the trial were pushed to the limits that it should have..I know it would have costed the state money but damnit, those dogs deserve it..
We all fought a good fight trying to see these dogs get justice. I along with many many others include (and still do) the survivors of Bad Newz Kennels. The only way that I can deal with my deep anger is to take myself and my mind back to his x dogs and see just how far they have come..They (the dogs) were the true victims and the true WINNERS as they got their chance at a life without the likes of MICHAEL VICK!!!!
"GAGE ANTHONY BURKE" RIP 3/12/08
IF I HAD ONE WISH IT WOULD BE TO have the chance to hold beautiful Gage. I would wrap my arms around him and just hold him as close to my heart as possible. While I worked on his Memorial Video and posting (on every forum I could find) Gage's story and the Petition that I started for the fight for Justice for Gage (which ended with over 9,000 signatures in 5 months-WOW), Gage became a big part of me and my life. He has a part of my heart and forever will. I am so proud of his family for their determination and fight to get Justice for Gage. I have spent countless days and nights talking on the phone with Gage's mom, Shana Burke. We laugh and cry and try to keep each others spirits up while waiting for the Gage's Courtdate. I think God meant for us to meet because she lives in Louisiana and I live in Virginia and we just happen to have the same cellular service. What are the chances of that happening? To ME AND SHANA it is a BIG blessing because there have many many times we've been on the phone for hours and we don't go a day without talking. The Burkes are an amazing family and I am so glad to be a part of their lives. And I love them for loving me (if that makes any sense).
Gage was just like your companion or mine. He was loved by by so many people. I have always felt that no matter the breed, a dog is a mirror image of their owners. Gage and the Burkes have proven that my feelings are right. They spent countless days, months, years training Gage. And because of their dedication he was/is a great example of how incredible "pitbull" can be. He went Trick-or-Treating in his SuperGage outfit. He kept the neighbor (the OTHER GOOD neighbor) company when her husband went out of town. He slept with kittens and bunnies. He loved life and everyone who came in contact with him fell in love with him. I say everyone. Let me rephrase that. Everyone except RAY STANFILL. Gage never knew hate. He never knew danger. He always seemed a little apprehensive about Ray but who would have ever thought that Gage knew something that his family didn't. They say animals can sense people and they react based on this. If only we could have read Gage's mind. On March 12, 2008 that hate and danger Gage never knew was introduced to him in a tragic way that would cost him his life. It was this day that Ray Stanfill was Gage's JUDGE, JURY AND EXECUTIONER, literally! This coward of a man knelt down, put a shotgun through the Burkes chainlink fence and he shot Gage pointblank in the heart. In a matter of mere seconds Gage was ripped from his family, a family that I love very much. Shana ran outside when she heard the shot and yelled for Gage, Gage didn't respond. (Keep in mind they have about 2 acres of fenced in yard)
She then yelled again while her yorkies were scratching like crazy to get inside the house. Gage did not come. She immediately ran into the backyard and in a matter of seconds she saw Gage lying on the ground as if he were asleep. He wasn't moving at all. When she got up to Gage it was apparant why he wasn't moving. Shana fell to the ground screaming Gage, Gage..She held Gage's head in her lap, trying to stop the massive blood that was pouring out of his body. She watched as the life went out of Gage's beautiful eyes and she held him close as he took his last breath. My heart breaks every time I think of what those moments must have been like for her. I just want to hold her and never let her go. I hate this man for what he has done and unless Ray Stanfill can undo what he did and can bring Gage back to his family, real justice will never be served.

This is the Crime Scene Video of the day that Gage was murdered in cold blood. As you can see he was in his own yard and if you look close at the collar you can see the finger nail marks where he attemped to pull Gage over the fence to tell the police that Gage was attacking him when he shot and killed him. This was a very hard video for Gage's mommie to make, but we all want the world to see the truth of what happen to Precious Gage. Please don't trust anyone with your pets and watch them at all times. Evil has no limitations!
This is a memorial video that I did for Eric & Jaycie Hart..They are a part of the Gage Foundation and good friends of mine...They are active and proud pitbull advocates and are involved in rescue and educating the public about this breed. They fostered Sugar and absolutely fell in love with this beautiful dog. Eric and Jaycie, we need alot more people like you in this world!!!!

Mercy, or Sugar, as we called her has passed away after only 6 short months since we found her.
I wrote a blog about her a while back, just before the adoption took place. of all the dogs we've helped save, this little girl touched our souls beyond imagination...
We only had her for one month, and cried when she left us, so i can't imagine how hurt her new family must be. Bless her soul, we're so grateful that we were made to be a part of her life.
she was truly loved and will be deeply missed, and forever dearly remembered.
