Kid Sam - Self-Titled LP (2009 TBL005 43mins 30secs)

RRR ALBUM OF THE WEEK

J AWARD NOMINATION; AUSTRALIAN ALBUM OF THE YEAR

track listing:

mirror drawings
down to the cemetery
sunday bus
landslide
a black ant
jodie makes a fire
close your eyes and it all goes black
we're mostly made of water
soft, grey rain

Kid Sam's startling debut is the work of tall cousins Kieran and Kishore Ryan, whose gift for crafting subtle, subversive rock'n'roll is evidence of a bright future. Kieran's assured, mature song-writing navigates themes of love, violence and the politics of the erveryday. Kishore's nimble, thoughtful drumming is counterpoint to Kieran's gritty guitar playing, a musical tension that creates remarkably well-crafted, timeless Australian music.

"...exquisitely crafted numbers, delicate and considered in their composition yet intensely executed. It’s astounding that this is their debut...a moving and timeless record."
- Mess + Noise

"a mature, diverse release. Meaning, 'really good'"
- The Vine

"It's their creative chemistry, and ability to create bindng and timeless songs however, that sets them apart. With Kid Sam, the stars have aligned: attention to songwriting collides with an unaffected recording ability, a work ethic and a knack for disarming lyricism. Hallelujah. I bet they can cook too."
- Steph Hughes (Triple J)

The album, produced by Nick Huggins, is available from March 15th, digitally through itunes, on CD through Paypal and in all good record stores nationally throughout Australia courtesy of Fuse.

Purchase release through Two Bright Lakes Store (you will be redirected to www.twobrightlakes.com to make a secure purchase via paypal)

Psuche/Kid Sam - tell tell/we're mostly made of water limited split 7" single (2008 TBL004 8mins11secs)

A 7" vinyl only release, showcasing the most recent additions to the Two Bright Lakes family, Kid Sam and Psuche. A pleasant taste of what is to come from forthcoming albums due out later this year for both of these distinctive bands.

Psuche’s music is explosive with creative energy, and freely moves between pop and experimental music. the single 'Tell Tell' is a taste of their mature composition skills, which contrasted by a playful sense of organic and electronic sound lead to unexpected moments of light and gravity.

Duo Kid Sam write disarming pop songs in the narrative traditions of intelligent folk music. Their single 'We’re Mostly Made of Water' foreshadows the tension and contrast found on the Kid Sam debut LP as the words and sounds centre around violence, romance and the politics of the everyday.

   About kid sam

"This song kills me. Such delicate guitar plucking and everything executed at the right moment. There's a real tension here and intensity... I'm so impressed. Well done guys."
- Zan Rowe on 'Landslide' (Triple J, 19 Feb 2009)

Tall cousins Kishore Ryan (Otouto, Seagull, Where Were You at Lunch) and Kieran Ryan form the melted, subverted, deconstructed troubadour duo Kid Sam.

Their debut self-titled LP has received tremendous support from community radio, being named Triple R album of the week (mid-March) and their first single 'We’re Mostly Made of Water' was added to Triple J rotation.

They make songs that traverse themes of violence, romance and the politics of the everyday, distilling the history of intelligent song writing within them. Kieran’s fluid and gritty guitar playing is the vehicle for songs that are remarkably well crafted and timeless. The drums are constantly reassessing their shape as Kieran’s rich vocals romance the listener. The result is subtle, subversive folk/rock’n’roll/pop.

However, what makes Kid Sam a genuine talent is simply that they make powerful, truly great Australian songs.

Starting out supporting great Australian artists, The Middle East, Firekites, Jack Ladder, and Nick Huggins, Kid Sam will be out on the road for the remainder of 2009. With the launch for their second single 'Cemetery' at Melbourne’s Newtown Workers Club selling out on the night, make sure you don’t miss Kid Sam if they play your town.

Their debut LP is produced by Nick Huggins, is out now through new Melbourne indie collective Two Bright Lakes and has been just been nominated for a J Award.

Anti-folk is a kind of hipster way of describing raw/punky/lyrical/quirky folk.  Kind of a misnomer, it is not *against* folk as such, rather a movement against old fashioned folk traditions.  Think Jeffrey Lewis/Kimya Dawson in US, Kate Nash in the UK and Darren Hanlon/Giles Field in Oz.  Confusing and wide-ranging genre!
Loving your album.  Production is spectacular too, you must be proud :)  Hope you manage to hear my stuff when you get on a working computer.  It's awesome, I promise!

Hey,

It was so beautiful to see you today at that myspace thing..I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great to hear a few familiar tunes :)
The only thing was though, was that I was sitting at the front, desperately wanting to stand up..but didn't have to guts to in case I ended up blocking people if they stayed sitting down ha ha. And I was even to shy to have a singalong..or lip-sync along ha ha. How'd you find the gig anyway?

Thankyou for a really gorgeous set, looking forward to seeing you again some time soon I hope.

My best,
Steph

Toy Balloon Tour!

Brisbane outfit Toy Balloon will release their debut album Toy Division on November 8 through Lofly Records, and to celebrate will perform an east coast launch tour throughout November.

Formed in 2007, Toy Balloon was originally a fledgling two-piece made up by Nimai Etheridge’s uniquely melodic wall-of-sound guitar and Greg Cooper’s beautiful sequenced electronic compositions. The band have since matured into a four piece featuring Chloe Cooper (Mr Maps) on key boards and Ben Green on drums.

The album was recorded and mixed at the Lofly Hangar in Brisbane, a DIY performance space that Toy Balloon has been an integral part of creating. Fostering emerging artists and left-of-centre music, the Hangar acts as a performance space, recording studio, and meeting place; and has resulted in a record with a rich, layered sound reminiscent of New Order, Mogwai, Boards of Canada, and LCD Soundsystem.

Catch Toy Balloon launch Toy Division at a venue near you this Oct/ November.

TOY BALLOON TOUR DATES:

Brisbane- Thursday 29 October- The Zoo, Fortitude Valley w/ Moon Jog, Tin Can Radio and Doom Doom.

Sydney- Wednesday 4 November- ‘Upstarts’ at Spectrum, Darlinghurst w/ Convaire and Black Bear Brown Bear

Sydney- Thursday 5 November- Oxford Arts Factory, Darlinghurst w/ World Champion and others

Melbourne- Saturday 7 November- Pony, Melbourne w/ Love Connection and Aoi

Toy Division is released November 6 on Lofly Records, with distribution through MGM.
