The Fender Center is dedicated to providing free and low cost performing arts education to children in and around the Inland Empire region of Southern California. It is committed to creating and maintaining a world-class museum and education facility that celebrates the performing arts in all of their diverse forms.
Through the Fender Center’s primary outreach focus, the Kids Rock Free® Program, the Center currently offers professional caliber performing arts education including piano, guitar, bass guitar, combo band, vocal performance and drums to children ages 7 – 17. Since the program’s inception in 1998, over 8,000 Southern California children have participated and received free and low cost musical instruction.
The primary goal of the Kids Rock Free® Program is to provide quality, accessible performing arts education for children. As such, there are no socio-economic entrance guidelines; the program is done on a first come first serve basis. The Center provides all musical instruments for children in the program and offers practice hours weekly for students with no instruments at home. Every student that participates in the program receives the first two sessions (4 months) completely free. Children may continue in the program beyond that time for a low-cost of $150 per eight-week session. If participants cannot afford these low-cost courses, they may request a scholarship. Over 90% of the students in the program receive full scholarships from the Fender Center thanks to the generosity of donors, private foundations and corporate support.
Over 600 children per week attend classes in the Fender Center’s facility. Students from over 64 different Inland Empire cities currently participate in the program with 54% of the students between the ages of 7 and 10, and the remaining 46% between the ages of 11 and 17.
Kids Rock Free® classes range from one to one and half-hours and meet once a week for a period of eight weeks. There are four eight-week sessions every twelve months which allows a minimum of 2,400 students per year to participate. Currently, there are over 2,000 students on a waiting list for the Kids Rock Free® Program. These students represent four Southern California counties including Riverside, Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County.
