Erik of Kill Your Critics's Blurbs
About me:
My name is Erik and I am the founder of Kill Your Critics, an organization and web site for people who are passionate about music of all kinds. Our full bio:

Kill Your Critics is your friendly revolution in music criticism. KYC is tailor made for people who are passionate about music. Our simple goal is to completely turn the current tide of music criticism with innovative ideas and a pleasant demeanor.

KYC was created in response the current state of musical criticism. Lately people who deem themselves “music critics” seem more concerned about how clever they sound and how many big words they use than actual serious analysis or commentary of the music itself. It had become normal for critics to take a “holier-than-thou” stance, placing artists below them, as if it’s the duty of the artist to live up to the highest standards of the critic. Negativity abounds, and when a so-called critic doesn’t like a band or sound they will mercilessly barrage them with negative commentary. If too many people like an artist, album, or song then it is also seemingly the job of the modern critic to attack it and tear it down as much as possible. It is uncool to be too excited or passionate about anything, so critics play it cool and try to act as if nothing is that great, especially when any amount of people are vocally passionate about it. Even when giving a glowing review emphasis is usually placed on the critic, with more (attempted) witty personal commentary than actual analysis of the music.

Kill Your Critics is meant to place the emphasis back on the music by having an open mind and trying out new ideas. What are our new ideas? For one we believe that the current norm in musical criticism – the critic gets a CD a week in advance, writes a review of it, and that review is published – is out of date. Music is a living and breathing entity, and so music criticism should be as well. Instead of one review of an album around the time it is released, at KYC we plan on having a couple, maybe more, reviews of the same album to represent us. Initial reviews will be released, but after the album dates a little there will be follow up reviews, as sometimes of the best albums are the ones that grow on you (a fact that modern critics seem to ignore).

Other ideas include embracing most any genre that people express interest in, both in the popular world and in the independent music scene. While most who read Rolling Stone for reviews frown upon indie releases as amateur (or simply ignore them) and many indie fans are vocally snobby with their hatred of pop music, at KYC we hope to bridge the gap and see the worthwhile qualities in each and beyond.

Anther idea we have is to break away from the modern critical trend of focusing solely on new releases. It is the rich heritage of past music that gives us any music we have today, and it is exciting for anyone who loves modern music to embrace what came before it. Plus just liking new music inevitably gets dull and repetitive after awhile, no matter how many different kinds of new music you like. With that in mind another main part of Kill Your Critics will be in-depth reviews of classic and groundbreaking albums and songs from the past, from a variety of genres including pop and rock music from the 50s to today, blues, country, soul, rhythm and blues, funk, hip hop, old sun era rock ‘n roll, big band, bluegrass, polka, and others.

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone who is passionate about music who isn't negative about all the stuff they don't like (i.e. they try to understand and at least appreciate it instead of just tearing it down even if it isn't their style).
