Twinkle, twinkle little star/Baby, you can drive my car…
The room is still cool and dark, but musical metaphors are scratching the surface of sleep, like a cat pawing at a bedroom door, impatient for its first feeding of the day. As usual, I got to bed far too late to be woken at this hour, but since I’m nearly as fond of poetry and song as I am of cats, I reach for the handheld recorder next to my bed and try to imitate the chorus that’s been colouring and looping through my dream like a movie soundtrack: It’s a gauzy screen of sapphire, indigo, and purple, laced with lavender and silver pearls; a ruby accent here and there… But, what was that line? Oh yes… My voice is more of a whisper than a melody, and I wonder if I’ll be able to make sense of this recording later. I reach for my notebook as a backup, but my eyes are still sticky with sleep, making my scribbles unintelligible.
Let me be, silly cat; I’m dead tired. I pull the covers up to my chin and curl back into a ball—pencil, notebook, recorder, scattered round me. But as I close my eyes, the bed feels crowded. The same images, lyrics, and melody keep skipping through my mind, like a record, stuck on the song that’s asking to be born. I roll over, thirsty for the warm, creamy contours of sleep, but the corner of my notebook digs into my back. Then it’s my pencil. Ouch.
It seems the cat won’t take no for an answer. This time, it’s the ghost of my Russian blue who’s returned for a visit.
"Hello, old friend," I say. "Nice to see you. But could you come back later? No? All right then. Welcome home."
I’m up now, hunched over my keyboard, fingers still stiff and awkward as they fumble for chords. I reach for my teapot, trying to warm my hands, and pour green tea into my favourite cup; scratches in its golden finish reveal an underlying silvery hue, suggestive of alchemy—small consolations for missed sleep. Jasmine-scented steam curls upward, mingling with the vapours of voice. What does this all mean? I wonder, lyrics spilling from the fleeting vespers of my dream, moistening morning with verse. But there is no time to figure it out. Sunlight is already fluttering across hardwood floors, reminding me that I need to get ready for work. I glance over at my Russian blue, now bathed in a honey pool of light, but he is too busy grooming to notice. “Do you know?” I ask, standing to get his attention. Barely pausing, he shoots me a vaguely annoyed look that seems to say, “my work is done.” He takes one last lick of his paw before turning his back and curling up on the couch for a nap. As he dozes off, his silver fur affords a spectacle of rainbows in the morning sun. Visiting hours are over.
