KIM=1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Japanese, loud, spunky, in your face! CHI=Vietnamese, coy, tough, and smarter than you!
Backed by the beats of DJ BiBimBop, mixing up the finest samples from TEACH YOURSELF KOREAN (tm) tapes!*
*he doesn't speak Korean either.
There are FIVE things you need to know about KIM CHI:
1. Kim Chi is a multimedia electro dance pop revolution made up of:
KIM: lyrical mastermind and dancing fool
CHI: artistic genius and PowerPoint stylist
DJ BI BIM BOP: the enigmatic beatbopping mixmaster behind the curtain
2. We sing in Korean, but we arent Korean. KIM was born in Oakland, Calif., and is half-Chinese, half-Japanese. CHI is from Kansas City, Mo., and is Vietnamese. If you sing our songs, you can learn Korean, too!
3. All of our samples and lyrics come from language course tapes. Other
people may find us confusing, but we are not confused! We are learning
Korean!
4. Hopefully, through the magic of songwriting, we eventually will learn to speak Korean. We can already say, Quite frankly, the services and facilities at this hotel are rubbish! and This fruit doesnt look too good! Thats a good start, dont you think?
5. Our goal is to play a stadium show in Seoul, with 5,000 Korean teenagers staring at us in dismay. Why are they singing about octopus now? Then they gradually come to understand: Wait, shes right! That fruit DOESN'T look too good! Thats the dream: for just one native Korean speaker to come up to us after a show and say, Its true. The services and facilities at this hotel ARE rubbish. In the end, its all about communicating. Yoboseyo!

In French there is a proverb that says "In may, Do as you wish...” It didn't fall on a deaf person’s ears. In Korea, May is dedicated to family (May 5th is Children's Day, May 11th is Adoption Day). In Montreal, May is the Month of Asian Heritage.
The irony is that the European artists exhibiting (Adel Kim Gouillon, Jane Jin Kaisen,
Mihee-Nathalie Lemoine) are Asian in appearance, but they grew up without their so-called culture. Through their art they tempt --as adults-- to recall and reconstruct a "whitened" and erased identity. It's by this inexistent cultural heritage linked to their physicality that the creative and personal imagination becomes pertinent... and important... to define the baggage of a culture --in progress-- in evolution.
The work presented is a collaboration between the three artists.
A picture of them as adults was taken in reference to their adoption pictures with the characterizing number. Each photograph was taken in front of agencies or embassies of the birthland or the adoptive country… each place refers more or less to the administrative steps linked to the adoption process. At the same time, personal pictures of each artist –taken in Montreal— will be exhibited as well.
During the exhibition, a 24 hour Project will take place and local artists are invited to join.
To give another dimension to Orientity, a selection of films called Adoptity will introduce Korean Adoptee Female Filmmakers everyday throughout the show, along with a Round table with them.
This touring exhibition started in Kyoto, then went to Hong Kong and to Grenoble.
Now as the Korean adoption is slowing down and the Chinese adoption is becoming more popular, we are having the first exhibition on the American Continent in Montreal.
