THE LONG VERSION:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RULE NUMBER ONE in writing an artist's biography -- "At all cost, avoid overblown adjectives and adverbs -- they immediately destroy credibility." Singer/Entertainer/Writer Kim Kehala is making a comeback of sorts. Her country debut was as Kim Frazee a few years back. Her biographer was G. Michael Allen of Nashville, at that time. And she quotes him here: "The following description spiked with a few adjectives and adverbs challenges this rule." (RULE 1). "Her beauty is elegant. Her confidence is obvious. Her excitement is contagious. These three traits you notice immediately when you meet singer/entertainer Kim Frazee. And when you witness her live performance, you'll see a classy energetic performer with a natural witty charm who has a vocal blend of 'bluesy with country style.'"
Kim grew up on a farm in wild and wonderful West Virginia, the daughter of a hardworking timber grader/boss/farmer, listening to the hillbilly bluegrass pickers on her mother's side of the family, and the jazz/big band/Broadway music on her father's side. Her mother played all genres of music on the family stereo while her father played a different variety in his 8 track player in his 4 wheel drive Jeep Wagoneer.
Kim's great grandfather was the leader of a hillbilly bluegrass band that was comprised of his five sons (the three daughters just listened). They also had a logging business. Kim says, "He was such a perfectionist. If his band made a musical mistake, he would stop them in the middle of a tune and start over." Kim doesn't restart her band, but by the age of five she had already learned musical perfection from her great grandfather. Influenced by all her musical relatives, Kim sang in school vocal groups and played trumpet and French horn in the school band. Upon high school graduation as valedictorian, she joined her first professional band as lead singer and trumpeter. Her maternal female cousin, Janet, was the head of the rock/pop band and made Kim audition, just like everyone else. Kim was adamant about pursuing her education while performing with this and other bands.
Her vocal music career really began when she sang as a contestant in the Miss West Virginia pageant. Even though she didn't win, (her high heel got stuck in her white satin evening gown and she tripped clear across the stage!) the urge to sing was strong, and the pageant officials suggested that she pursue her music more seriously (and learn how to walk better than a cow).
With money earned from weekend appearances with the bands, as well as college work-study and working at Snowshoe Ski Resort, Kim helped pay her way through college. With a grueling schedule of a biology and chemistry double major, she was left with no time for singing and was forced to quit performing in order to concentrate on her studies. Her determination and dedication paid off when she graduated with honors with a bachelor of science degree. Also upon graduation Kim was awarded a Rotary International Graduate Fellowship to study one year in Auckland, New Zealand. When her Fellowship was over, she returned to the United States (via Australia, Hawaii and California) to work as a special chemist in clinical labs throughout the East and completed one year of medical school.
During all this time, Kim always missed the excitement of singing and performing. Therefore, she began singing locally again and progressed to being a "perennial favorite" at regional fairs, festivals and nightclubs. In her choreographed stage show, Kim performs a complete genre of music. She has made the rounds in Nashville performing as a guest at various clubs, and doing her shows during the week of Fan Fair.
Kim's first serious music project was her album, "Pieces," recorded at Merit Studios on Music Row in Nashville. It was produced by Gold Record holding Jack Solomon (Alabama's acoustic/rhythm guitar player) and engineered by Grammy winning Tom Pick. Jack's wife, lovely Melba Montgomery, and her family helped Kim with the whole project. The first released single from the album, "Trail of Tears," written by Juice Newton, was well received by country radio and added to several national charts, including "Cash Box" magazine and the Independent Country Charts.
Kim is currently working on her next single releases and her forthcoming album. She also dabbles in songwriting and is writing a non-fiction book about her experiences in life and "the genuine country music era". She is putting a band together and hitting the road again. You may also follow her pursuit of her neverending dreams at her other music page at http://www.myspace.com/kimkehala.
And Mr. G. Michael Allen finished her first music biography with these words: "When you view Kim's determination, dedication and these traits: beauty, confidence and excitement combined with tremendous vocal talent, you'll soon realize rule number one does not meet the challenge--credibility restored."
PS. "KEHALA" is Kim's Native American name from her great great grandmother who used to work the farms with the old white work horse while the men sat on the porch, drinking moonshine, and pretending they were gentlemen farmers of The South! "Kehala" is Lakota/Dakota for "Little Shell". People who know Kim think she should have been named "PETALA" instead, which means "Little Fire"!
